Paint question

I recently bought a 92 RS. The previous owner painted the car, but he informed me that he only shot one coat of clear on it. He had planned on sanding it to smooth it out and putting another 2-3 coats of clear on. But he did not get the chance to. He said that he would do it for me for a pretty hefty price. I said no thanks.
I have shot paint plenty in my time, but never shot clear coat. So my question is this;
Can I wet sand the clear coat that is on the car right now with say 1000-1500 grit, then shoot clear over that? Will it come out ok and not be all flat looking becasue of the sanding?
All the help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Wetsand with 1500. (1000 grit might shrink up and show scratches). Then spay 2 coats of clear, but watch because spraying over clear is not like spraying over basecoat; its smoother 'not textured' and will run easier. Once it sets, wetsand and buff.
