Trunk Motor (ATTN: lonsal)
Trunk Motor (ATTN: lonsal)
Hey all,
I noticed that there are some posts with replacing the trunk motors by lonsal, however is there a way to diagnose why it may not be working?
Mine is not running at all. Could it be the switch, or the motor itself? How do I test this. What are all the wires that come off this thing?
I took out the complete bracket with everything attached.
How much does a replacement motor and plastic housing cost? Can I rebuild this myself.
Thanks

You have several options to repairing the 86-91 hatch pull-down units. First off, I've recently updated the instruction sheet I include with the TDS 101170 replacement nylon guide kit ($18.50). What had previously been a double-sided instruction sheet has grown to two double-sided legal sized sheets. Originally I only sold the guide kit, so the instructions were just on repairing that portion of the unit. At the recommendation of customers I started stocking the gear nut GM p/n 20160587 or TDS 1099111 ($6.50) and reinforced motor housings TDS 103121 ($39). I had already developed a method of reinforcing them (which I've since improved). The instructions now cover the differences in repairing the 86-87 & 88-91 units and covers the motor housing and gear nut replacement as well. I have other info in the form of scans from my 88 & 90 HELMS manuals that help in diagnosing the pull-down unit and the hatch solenoid release. I can e-mail these to anyone that needs it. I've also started stocking the Permatex WL-9 1.5 oz. tubes of white lithium grease I recommend ($2.25). As of this Month I include a tube free when all 3 (guides, gear nut and reinforced housing) are ordered.
I also announced my "August Special". Which would be the way to go if you are on a tight budget. See the attached thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=123438
As I state in the thread, I am close to announcing a new program of selling repaired and re-manufactured 86-87 & 88-91 hatch pull-down units. Repaired units, with new guides, new gear nuts and reinforced motor housings and a 6-mo. warranty will be $84.50. Re-manufactured units have a brand new motor with a motor housing that has an improved design (of course I will reinforce it as well) have a 1-yr warranty and price of $145 (both are tentative pricing). There will be an additional core charge of $30 which is refunded when your repairable unit is returned for credit.
I still don't have a web site up yet. Someone is helping me put one together as time permits. So you'll need to e-mail me at: topdownsolutions@yahoo.com for a price list or further info.
As you can see, you have several options available. Good luck, Lon.
