Door won't open from inside

Door won't open from inside
I'm posting for a friend (he has no computer BUT.. he got a camaro!!
) ok the other day he asks me for a door handle for the inside that his is broken so i gave him one well he came back the next day and told me it still wont open he said he took it apart and pulled the handle and everything seems to be working fine all the linkages are moving like they should be. anyone know a possible cause of this problem? 
OH almost forgot ..it will open from the outside

I would begin with lubricating all the linkagees and making sure its linked to the mechanism in the back of the door.
