tonneau cover questions
tonneau cover questions
Is there an electric release for the tonneau cover on an 87 convertible? When I was putting speakers in this weekend, I noticed actuators on each side, but no switch to use them. The switch between the window switches is for the deck lid. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon

If I believe correctly in '87 they used a "hatch" release switch in there but it should be for your tonneau. If it doesn't pop your tonneau than someone changed it to pop your trunk or your switch is bad. The switch for a tonneau is like 50 bucks where the one for a hatch is like 13 bucks. But to answer your question that switch should operate your tonneau, if not look back by the lever where you pop the back latch for the top, I know some firebird 'vert had it there too! you never said which you had!

Well, if the last guy that owned your car did anything like the last one did to mine you might find the two solenoids (actuators) actually connected to themselves IE no power, no switch.
You may want to remove the console and peek under there. I just bought two solenoids on ebay, than came to find out yesterday after ripping the interior out of my vert the idiot chopped it all to h*ll, because he wanted an amp in the backseat, and that my original solenoids still worked.
I now need to rewire everything, but it's not that hard. You just need a constant, the switch, the relay and a ground.
Your wiring should all be there, you will just need to back trace it. Great time to replace the carpet if it needs it
Because getting to that wiring with the carpet intact is impossible IMO
Email me if you need any help I plan on getting pictures up soon.

Thanks for the help guys. The car is an 87 IROC, 305/5speed. It actually belongs to a good friend of mine. We recently repainted the car and are still chasing odds and ends. I will check the seitch to see if that is the culprit. The main reason I ask is this car had an electric trunk pulldown too.
