Paint and body guys, need your help!
Ok. A friend of a friend is painting my car at his house. He does body/paint work at a dealership and paints cars in his garage on the side. I saw his work and liked it, so I decided to have him paint my car. He quoted me $1000 to fix a rust spot in my rear/driver 1/4 panel, repair all small dents (maybe 10 of them), put on a new IROC Turbo hood w/ hood pins, and paint the car w/ Chrysler Flame Red w/ Chrysler Silver Metallic stripes, clear coat it and wet sand it. Sounded like a HELL of a deal to me.
Well, now he says that the paint I want is more expensive than he thought and wants $200 more. Still sounds like a great deal to me, but I am naturally skeptical about the sudden price hike. Is the paint really that expensive? Should I just fork over the money b/c it stil sounds like a cheap price for all that work? Or should I say screw you, you said $1000?

Body and paint supplies really are expensive. I'm doing my own work and have already spent approx. $850 cdn and I'm still not done. Thorough restoration though with each panel / peice painted separately (more waste).

i do bodywork myself, i cant paint though, but 1200 is an excellent deal. the guys that paints at work wouldnt touch a car for under 2000 dollars. since you have seen his work, that is another plus. i wouldnt assume you have a paint booth at your house, that is where you said it will be painted. ask him if there is anyway he can get it in a booth. i have seen some awesome paint jobs roll out of peoples garages, but i dont like the chance of trash settleing in the paint. plus a paint booth is a controlled climate wich will help the paint cure alot nicer then a garage. good luck man, and post pics of the new paint job!!

Thanks for the help guys. I knew even at $1200 that it was a great deal, just wanted to make sure he was telling me the truth about the paint. He started doing the body work while I was at his house earlier today, hopefully the car will be done in a few days. I will definitely post some pics.

Yeah Man, that sounds like a killer deal to me. I do paint and body work too....and that would cost probably just as much as me doing it myself...so to have someone do it for you....where you don't even have to get your hands dirty.....sounds fantastic!!

Just give him the $1200. It is a hell of a deal if you have seen his work before and you were happy with it. Mine was $2000 and i thought that was a deal for the job they did! I got the same hood too, plus a spoiler, new front end, and replaced all decals, emblems, and lights! I say give him the money and post pictures when it is done too. good luck with it
