Rust Rapair: Need expert advice.
Hi all,
I plan on getting some rust repair done on my 91 formula before winter. It has a few rust spots the size of a quarter. The rust is located at the corner where the door neets the rocker panel and on the inner fender well.
It appears to be rusting from the surface (outside in.) What is the correct method of doing this repair such that I get best results?
I got an estimate of $400.00 from the body shop. They said they would sand blast, prime and paint. Is there a treatment procedure for the metal after it is stripped?
Thanks
BILL

sand blasting works great, but it's soooo messy(you'll be digging sand outta your ears for a week!
the key is to make sure that you get rid of all the rust, don't rely on rust converters. to "treat" the bare metal a zinc based primer will work just fine. after that you may need a little filler if the metal is pitted from the rust. then primer and paint

Well I'm doing mine myself. My 90 RS has a rust spot on the roof right by the T-Tops in the middle. Its about the size of a 1/4 dollar. It has already eaten through. Even the underside (under headliner) is rusted to hell. Its actually pretty bad, but I'm gonna try to fix it. I plan to dremel as much rust away as I can, then POR-15 everything from the bottom and top, bundo the hole shut and get it ready for Macco heheh.

Yeah that sounds similar to my plan.
Though I know I'll get yelled at for
A.) Using Bondo
B.) Using Maaco
but my partner in crime (we are starting up http://www.motorsportconnect.com ) is getting his Mazda Protege painted at our local Maaco and could get it back today, that will determine whether or not I trust my car there...
And as for the Bondo thing, I don't actually have any holes, but I may have to cover up pitting. Maybe.
