I was just wondering how I would go about removing the blk plastic around the antenna. Do I need to get at it from inside the fender or what?

 

There's a metal disc on top of that plastic piece with a '+' pattern cast in it. You can grab that with a good channel lock pliers, but use an old shirt between the jaws and the car. That will keep it from scratching. Then, just turn counter-clockwise and unscrew. Done deal.
