Hood Hang Up

On my 85 Standard, when ever I raise the hood, the left (facing the front) rear corner (near the hinge) hangs up. I have to move around to the side and raise it from there. I see no damage or cause for this and the hood stays up fine from asbout 45 degrees to full open. So I don't believe its the support Any suggestions?

Lube it up. Probably a bit rusty. SOme good old penetrating oil or something should fix you up. Wd40 even.

Maybe the struts too. Take them off and see what happens.

a new spring might help out as well, i'm sure 10+ years of compression can make a difference!

How exactly did you fix the non pop up hood thing? My GTA stared doing that about a year ago, and i have to bang on the hood for it to open.

Thanks,

Dave

Hey polishdevil. Usually the reason for those hoods to not pop open is cause the secondary hood latch needs to be lubed up real good. They seize up pretty easy in time.

lol, this is what I do ALL the time. I pull the latch while slapping the hood at the same time. A few firm hits and it pops up. I noticed that my spring isn't seating in the pocket right so when it gets compressed it doesn't load up like it's suposed to. It's more of a side loading, still works but not as good. I also have the hange up when lifting, gotta clean it and lube it up I guess. I also think my latch cable is loose. I can pull the release handle before I feel any tension BUT when the hood is up and I'm looking at it there isn't a problem?!?!?! When it starts to get bad I'll fix it, until them this makes for a good theft deterent system . No longer can they easily break in, pop hood, rip out alarm. I've also got a backup battery and a couple extra sirons hidden, ain't I a stinker.
Anybody know of slightly larger hood springs from older junkyard cars that would possibly fit?

My hood used to have the same non popping up problem. I replaced the hood release mechanism with one from an 87 Pontiac Safari Station wagon. Works beautiful now. On the Firebirds, the latch mechanism is not supported very well, it appears that over time and flexing, it just is not straight anymore. The part of the latch that swings gets misaligned and won't drop when there is tension on it. The exact same latch is on lots of GM cars. 77-90 Caprices have the same part. Just take your time removing the hood release cable and clip. I tried adjusting mine it worked for awile. Then it started it again. I replaced mine and most recycling yards won't even charge ya for the part. I would not suggest getting one out of another F-body though.
