Hatch Strut Detachment?

I'm trying to replace the hatch struts on my 84 Trans Am, but can't seem to get the struts to come off of the body. Disconnecting them from the frame was a piece of cake, but on the body there's some kind of sticky black stuff around the connection so I can't see what I'm doing. Is there something I unscrew in there, does it pop off, anybody know how to take it off?

I'd greatly appreciate any help,
Thanks

well down near the interior plasics there is a torx screw that ya undo, under a plastic cap on the hatch deck lid there is a 7mm bolt on each strut then ya just pull and the strut will come off (make sure to disconnect the defroster wires if ya have em)

I Believe The little nut on the top is an 8mm or 5/16s and the torx star is a 45. Thats what I remember, make sure someone is holding up the hatch to avoid it falling. Good Luck

Just replaced mine, I believe the strut-to-hatch bolt is a 5/16 and the strut-to-body bolt is a t-50 ... just pop off the little plastic caps, and if you don't have a torx that big go find a pair of vice grips

:hail: vicegrips

HAHA, I was at the junkyard getting the struts and told my friend to hold the hatch from the center ... so the dumbass holds it from the driver side corner.... it fell on his arm pretty damn hard ....he was chasing me around with a crowbar afterwords
