Car stored outside growing mold!

I've had my 84 Z28 stored outside over the Winter and it's had a little problem with moisture. It has a bit of a leaky T-roof and hatch, but not enough to get the carpet really wet, just a little damp after a rain.

Apparently this has been enough moisture to start a science-fair project growing on the the leather in my car. The shift **** and steering wheel have a nice green fuzz growing over it. I've cleaned it off, but it seems to come back after a week or two. The bigger problem is I don't know where else this mold is starting to grow. I definitely don't want to be discovering any fun surprises in the future.

So what can I do to control this moisture problem (assuming that it is what's causing the mold.) Anyone else had this happen before? Any tips on storing a car outside in a rainy place? Thanks!

WoW!!! Sounds like maybe a moisture problem to me...most likely from your carpet. I bet it stays moist for quite awhile after a good storm, and doesn't get "aired" out.

Just my guess. You didn't mention whether you have a cover on it or not - but if you don't, get one.

But before you do- I'd put it in a garage if possible and keep the windows down for a few days to dry out.

put a box of baking soda in the car. that should take all the moisture out of the air.

My parent's use a little thing called a Dry-Z-Air in their Trailer when it's stored for the winter.... sort of a dehumidifier
check it out:

It's cheap too!! I'm going to pick one up for my car when it comes off the road in a couple days

Thanks for the replies guys. I started out putting a box of baking soda in the car since I had some handy. While it definitely reduced the "respawning" rate of the mold, it's still coming back slowly. So I went out and bought some "Dry-Z-Air" as recommended. Hopefully it will do the trick since it's a little more intended for this sort of thing. I'll let ya know.

I actually neglected to put a car cover on it, not sure why. Definitely something I will do for next year. Unfortunately I can't stick her in the garage because my other Camaro is being stored there. I'd rather have the 84 engulfed in a ball of mold then have my real "baby" outside.
