What causes window scratches?

I have some scratches on the outside of my driver's side power window in my 92 camaro. What causes this? It looks like it happened when it was rolled up or down. I bought the car like this, and i want to get new glass, but i need figure out what caused the scratches on the old glass before i put the new glass in. Thanks

Check your power window tracks sometimes they can brake oor slip and leave a nasty scratch. the best way to tell if they are off the tracks is when you roll the window all the way down it will make a crunching sound. I had that same problem with my firebird.
