Peeling paint HELP!!!

My Paint on my hood of my 92 bird is chipping really bad..When i go to wash my car it comes off when i spray it with the hose. So i was thinking about trying to repaint the hood myself. Im gonna do some practice work first on some other things. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem and what steps did u take and how did it turn out?? I have no painting experience but i cant afford a paint job and im tired of looking at the chipping spots!!

If the paint is chipping off then you'll have to sand all the paint off down to at least the primer and then paint it again. If you just rough up the paint that's left you'll have indentations where the paint peeled off. My Iroc was starting to do that on the roof/sides behind the side windows and i just sanded it all the way to bare metal (for various other reasons) and painted it. I just saw an 87 camaro SC that had a cheap maaco paint job like that. it had runs everywhere and you could see huge spots on the roof and hood where the paint peeled off and they just painted over it. It looked like krap. Trust me when i say do it right because it WILL SHOW UP.

what grit sand paper would u suggest. I got this dupli-Color auto spray from auto zone and on the back of the can it says use #400. However someone told me to use 320. Guess i will take off all the peeling paint. I wanna make sure this color will match the rest of the car. The color code for my car is 37U Bright Aqua. This stuff i got from autozone says DSGM 440 Bright Aqua. It looks to be the same color. but i wanna make sure.

Just an interesting fact, look at the 11th digit on your VIN. If it's an L, it was built at Van Nuys, California. With the tough environmental laws they have in California, they had to use water based paints. There is one other place that built F bodies, and they didn't have to use the water based paint, and didn't have the paint issues that the cars from Cali had. My GTA was built in Van Nuys, and the paint sucks. I'm going to have mine repainted this fall. The enamel on my paint job peels when I'm at the car wash. I hate that. So, if you have an L as the 11th character in your VIN, you can thank the great state of Califonia for your jacked up paint! Matt

Rattle cans

When u paint with a rattle can it can look very good providing that u don't omit a very important step - color sanding .

When I was 17 my brother bought a '70 Camaro that was primered for $400. He had no intention of keeping it, just going to try and sell it for more. He just happened to find 24 cans of blue spray paint in a dumpster. Yeah, we painted that puppy real good.

After it dried it looked kind of dull. I asked him how could he sell it for more? Then he showed me how to color sand. We used the standard 1200 grit, with kitchen soap, running water, and light elbow grease. After doing the whole car in about 4 hrs he wiped it down and let it air dry. The next day he used a special wax (now sold by Meguires and others) to buff out the color. It looked awsome! Dang near showroom. I was impressed.

He sold it a week later for $1100. $700 profit for a couple of hours work. Try it next time.

Re: Rattle cans

There is about 15-20 peeling spots on the hood. I went ahead and painted a spot first to see how the color would look... I sanded it down a lil bit with 400 grit. Cleaned the area. Then sprayed a few coats let it dry for an hour and then put a few coats of clear on it...It really dont look bad at all... Except u can tell where the patches of chipping paint was...Should i use filler primer to bring it even with the rest of the paint??
