Going for the fade - Using a ground coat?
So I wanted to get some funky graphics or flames or something going for this paint job I'll spray, but- people like to hit my car with their doors. I need to keep the black door rub strip on there... which kills any cool graphics. Have you guys seen tribaldaze's car?? https://www.thirdgen.org/rides/rideimages/87gta1.jpg Hot damn, that's a hell of a paint job. And if it were my car, you'd see that big ugly black rub strip going right down the middle of the door.
So I think a fade would be pretty slick. After reading up on what BOTLFED and 82camaro mentioned as regards a ground coat affecting the final color... well, am I right:
I'm thinking a three-color ground coat. Black on the bottom 1/3 of the car. White near the top 1/3 of the car. Then, some gray covering the middle 1/3 of the car.
I'd use tape and paper to get a "line" for the bottom 1/3rd black, then tape/paper to get the upper 1/3 painted white. Then when I'd spray the gray, I'd remove all the tape/paper, and get some overspray on the black and the white- kind of like a fade.
Then I'd spray the top coat of my choice. I'm hoping this would impart a subtle change of color in the top coat.
Sound good? Or have I had too many beers, and I'm way off the right track? 82camaro said his car looks red in the sun, and plum under indirect lighting. I'm hoping this basecoat would have the same effect- a very slight fade. Nothing you'd see from 100 feet back, but maybe if you were up close, you'd notice the paint was darker near the bottom of the car.
Thanks guys!!

I have a body color bump strip that I am very fond if, You could paint it to match the body to blend in I would think...
John
You can see it here on this pic... (Granted its monocolor but it hides pretty well...)

Thanks for the info, but I think I'm not going to bother with graphics..
Anyone have an opinion on the original question (if having a black/gray/white groundcoat would impart a "dark->light" fade in the color coat)? Back to the top! Thanks!
