Is there any way to do them in blue? because superbirghtleds only offer those plug and play in blue, would i have to find some single led bulbs and solder resistors in myself? or is there a ttype of plug and play bulb in blue?

 

Superbrightleds.com has the wide angle plug and play bulbs in blue (the same one used in the red cluster a few posts ago). I just added them to my car and they look great.

Yes, you pull out the old filament bulb from its holder and replace with superbrights LEDs in whichever color you choose. Resistors are built in so it is a true plug and play mod

 

Yep, I just plugged them right in where I took the old one out. The only downside is the inability to dim them, but they are a good light level so its not a big deal.

 

Anyone have grief with the make them yourself lights? I made them using two led's with a 220 ohm resistor. use a battery to test them, works fine. put them in the dash, zero light? suggestions?

 

how many of these bulbs would i need to do a firebird cluster, heat panel, and shifter(i know 1 for this)

 

theres like ten sockets in the firebird cluster that lights up the surroundings the rest are for like turn signals (2) and the others are the ones that light up red (about 7 or 8)
dont know about the heat panel sry but i heard it might be one also

 

Yeah, the heater control and shifter have a single bulb.

Have you done this mod to your 82 Firebird? You should have the same gauge cluster I do in my 84 right? What bulbs did you use?

hey Ozz yeah we have the same guage cluster nothing really changes in between the years we all still have those rally style guages only thing that changes is whats in it i did the mod myself from a broken LED flashlight but you can buy 194 led bulbs for a direct replacement

 

The camaro gauges changed in 90, the original cluster style was 82-89 and the new electronic speedo one was 90-92. I am not sure on a firebird though since I never had one but it looks like BadBrains420HR answered that one

 

Alright, well that answered my question about the LED's. Looks like a winter project after I move and can get the car parked. right now it's my daily driver and since I"ve never had the dash apart I know it'll take me considerably longer to do than what you guys have said. hehe At least for the first time.

 

I found in some posts that while the cluster stayed the same until 89, they (at least on the firebirds) switched from a mechanical to electronic speedo in 1985, at least so far as I've been able to tell.

That said, as with the Badbrains420HR, the lights should be the same from 82-89 so that's what I'm going with when I order them.

 

i remember my first time took me a lil while just dont forget to get a long screwdriver to take the cable off the speedo(flashlight will be handy so u can see it it just has a lil clip so it shouldnt be that hard and lowering ur completly dropping ur steering colomn will make it easier

 

I never considered dropping the steering colomn. Where are the bolts for it, is it hard to do?

 

In my Firebird, I've never had to drop my steering colomn. It might make it easier to get out (slightly), but I've never found it nessisary.

 

Not to hijack the original thread but as I've never pulled the instrument cluster. Aside from the dash pad (8 screws I think?), what else needs to come off to get the instrument cluster out?

im showing two gauge clusters the light blue one is from an 82 firebird and the white one is from a 1990 firebird

the red rings around them are the ones you all will want to replace with LEDs the green rings you dont have to replace at all cus it doesnt matter really

 

Looking at your cluster pic of the 1990, would that be the same cluster as my 1992 formula? I am going to order the led's in blue. Should I get the single or quad led 194's? If my cluster is the same as the 1990 i should need 9 bulbs right?
Last question, besides the guage cluster where else can i put the 194 bulbs? I would like all my lights in the car to be blue to match my radio and radar detector

 

get the 5 smt leds from frickinbrite, they are awesome, 2 in your mirror, should have 1 or 2 in your heater?

 

So the ones in the mirror are the ac/heater unit are the same 194 bulbs? So 13 all together? how about the shifter, is it also a 194?

 

ok im doing this to my truck and all my autometers in my camaro...now i have a autogage tach...it has teh twist in type bulb in the front....does anyone have this one and can tell me what kinda bulb is in it...i talked to autometer and he says its a 37 or 86 bulb...superbright leds dont have anything like that so im thinkin its a 74 in there...anyone....cuz im gonna order this like couple hours

Whatever you do tho, just don't buy those plug/play LEDs and stick them in there. They are not bright enough, and don't fill the lens with enough light, especially in the day time.

 

This looks neat and all but I love the way my dash and Hvac light up. Now Autometer make gauges for the pillar pod and I think I'm going to get a set.

Hey there boys and girls, I had this idea a while back, and I just happened to have a few of those 8 inch 7 color LED rods sitting around, soo.... I used a dremel to cut a rectangular hole in the top of the black bezel that the clear plastic pane fits on, and then (somehow, its been like two years) attached the seven color rod to the top. I covered the rod with one layer of masking tape to get rid of the spotlight effect, and since there were two rods wired to the controller, I cut a small portion of the bottom of the dash out under the dash pad on the passenger side. I now have a seven color adjustable gauge cluster that (IMHO) looks kick-***, especially since the blue highlights all the yellow and red hash marks, and it looks very clean as well with the passenger side floorboard lit up to match. I'll see if I can post some pics in the near future

I finally got my LED's in the mail from China, took almost a month to get but I am very happy with the results. I put in the 5led bulbs. I have done the guage cluster and the review mirror and I also put in the 25led bulb in the dome light. I still need to do the shifter and the HVAC but I do not know how to do it yet. Here are some pics of what I have so far. Tell me what you think!

 

Ok I pulled the HVAC blubs and shifter blub out and they are a lot smaller then the 194's that i used in the guage cluster. What size are they and can i get them in a led?

This is all neat and everything but arnt we turning into *****s by doing this I would not put that blue light in the front but maybe the hatch light would work. And even make it red. That would kind of neat

 

Actually, I think interior led's are off the hook. Done right, they can add a great ambiance to any vehicle. Best use of them I ever saw, Black 98 Trans Am, black wheels, no chrome on the outside, with deep purple Led's/neon under his car. Looked like the damn thing was floating as he drove by...it was SWEET!

In the end, it's what you like. Some like it, some don't. For me, personally, as long as it's understated and adds background rather than being in your face, it's cool.

 

i'm not really seeing the r i c e in this.. just my oppinion but i think blue interior lights bring such a clean look to any car.. i want to do this to my 92.. but i've got bigger things on the list first.. so for now.. stock lights

 

I used to have some in my floor board and they looked sweet, Not really rice to me either, a huge wing in the back would be though.

 

Personally I don't care what one person considers "rice", as long as it looks nice I'm game for it. I'll be doing either amber or red lights sometime later this month, probably duals or quads.

How many bulbs are there in a 87 Camaro's dash +HVAC? I know there is only one in the shift console, but not sure about the others. Thanks!

IIRC, there are 13 bulbs; 11 in the cluster, one each in the HVAC controls and the shift quadrant.

 

ok so the WLED-x5 LED Wide Angle LED bulb 12 VDC 5-LED Wedge Base bulb (194/168 type) would fit in my gauges on a 1990 camaro?

 

I looked at a spare I have, the cluster has 14 if you include the blinkers and high beam indicator. There are also 8 locations across the bottom (not all used) for BRAKE, SES, SEAT BELT, etc. The HVAC has one, I can't answer for the shifter since I have a 5-speed.

Those are the ones I intend to use in my 89. They'll fit the 90 cluster also, but you'll only need about 4 or so to light the gauges - 90-92 gauges focus the light through the end of a plastic projection behind the cluster, sort of a fiber optic principle, you may get away with using a narrow angle LED.

 

FYI: Keep the bulb in the SES light location. For some reason, there's enough current/voltage there to dimly illuminate an LED. At least in my experience.

 

HELP!!!! i just went and bout some 194 led lights from autozone (just the bulb) i FINALLY get my dash off and go to put the lights in and there is the bad news....the little bracket that holds the light is a entire assembly and it says you have to replace the ENTIRE thing you cant just pull the light out and replace it with the led!! WTF good news there is only 4 194s and like 6 161s on a 1990 camaro rs...

ok to the point anyone know where i can get the ENTIRE assembly and the led (194 bulbs) for my camaro gauges??
