how do you get anti-freeze out of carpets?

grrrr..... this is really getting annoying. ever since my heater core blew and pissed anti-freeze all over the passanger side floor, ive had this nasty smell in my car that wont go away and its 100% comeing from that carpet. ive tryed every kind of carpet shampoo and air freshener i can find and nothing helps. short of replaceing my whole carpet im not sure what to do about this. i have a wet-dry vac and i have literaly scrubbed it 5 times with carpet shampoo and vaccumed all of it back out, then toweled it dry only to find a few days later that my car develops that stink again. ive ripped out the insulation underneth the carpet because it was totaly saturated with the **** and i put some paper towel under it to soak up anything else. there is no trace of anti-freeze left on the passanger side or in the dash, the stink seems to be infused with the carpet. is there anything else i can do besides changeing the whole carpet? there has to be some sort of "industrial strength" carpet cleaner out there that can remove this stuff, im sure im not the first person to encounter this problem.

Take your seats and console out and remove the carpet. Take it to the car wash and steam it, Take it home and let it dry, and put it back in your car.

...or take it out, and use one of those rental steam cleaners that they have in grocery stores.

man, i feel sorry for you. that heater core is a real son of a bitch to change. whats with this take the carpet out stuff? thats hard work, and most likely my car will be out of commision for more than a day. how can you say take the carpet out so easily? its like asking someone to pull the engine just to change the spark plugs. i used some more carpet cleaner stuff on it and i think im slowly killing the smell, but really all i wanted to know is if theres some special **** i can buy that neutralizes the smell, or just antifreeze in general.

I work at a Detail Shop and that's how we clean the carpet, that is really badly stained and stinks. If you get up early and take the seats out, along with the console, the the carpet will come out. It's not that hard! Then steam it off and let it dry in the sun, it will be done drying by the end of the afternoon. If you have to drive it, then put the seats back in without any carpet. Just an opinion.

Simple Green!!
Last wkend I forgot there was a gallon of antifreeze in the back floorboard. My son's friend kicked it over & left it on it's side.....
I used towels to get most of it, then used Simple Green in a bucket with scrub brush. Then go down to local car wash & use the vac.
good luck,

center console and stuff

My problem is for the life of my I can't get my shift **** off...

it's one of those leather kinds.. and I haven't figured it out yet..

and I got a Q... I have an older style steering wheel, and the trigger for the horn just broke off..

The part the broke off is the clip inside the steering wheel that holds a little piece of plastic in... and when you press the center it presses that piece of plastic to trigger the horn.. to replace it, I pretty much have to take the entire steering wheel appart?...

damn that 15 year old plastic!

About your shift ****, turn the key in the on position, make sure your park brake is on, and pull the shifter down as far as it goes. Get a flathead screwdriver and pry the clip out of the front of it, and pull hard as **** to get it off. Be careful, I hit my mouth when it finally let it go. BTW, that's for the automatic, I don't know about the manuals.

427Camaro is right. You can simply put the drivers seat back in if you need to drive before you're done replacing the carpet. 4 simple bolts. Don't forget the seatbelt though.

I had the same problem... My girlfriend at the time was complaining that her purse kept getting wet, and I noticed an odor. At first I had no idea how there could be coolant inside my car... but then I found it was the heater core's fault. Damn thing..... Listen the carpet was a piece of cake compared to replacing the heater core. I bought my carpet for around $115 at Classic Industries. You can also get it from 1aauto.com or something like that. New carpet is nice, it's clean, doesn't smell, and there are no stains.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

ah well, at this point the smell isnt so bad, the more shampoo "treatments" i give it the less it stinks, eventualy ill get rid of the smell. if im gona take out the whole carpet i might aswell replace it, ill save that for another time. theres alot of rust i need to grind off, so when it comes time for me to remove the carpet ill just get everything done in one shot. this carpet is stained pretty bad from mold(leaking t-tops) and various **** people have stepped in and tracked it into my car. ever notice how disrespectful passangers are to your cars? the drivers side is almost mint condition(seats, door, carpet) where as my passanger side is total crap. the door scrapes against the bottom when it closes, the nice light tan carpet is almost dark brown, same with the seats.... damn passangers......
