I don't like plexiglass but I would like to replace my rear hatch glass that weighs a ton for a factory looking plexiglass hatch any thoughts?

Plexiglass is indeed much lighter and will not shatter. However, plexiglass like lexan is prone to spiderwebing, scratches easily, and will fog with time.
If your car is a show car then don't, it won't look good once the plexiglass begins to show its age. If you want the weight savings for racing then I say go for it, but you really should lighten the front end up for racing. You want to keep the weight on the rear.

In addition to that. Another weight saving method would be to get a notchback kit.
