I've never done body work prior to doing it on my car, sand the area best as possible, clean then apply the bondo. Next let it dry and then sand down, try to feather it into flush with the body "use a flat sanding block and not your hand" Now with put a paper towel in your hand and slide it over the area you just finished. Feel it out to see if its flat/square with the rest of the body. Then you can spray some paint over that area if you want to see for sure how it will look when painted.
