anyone replace thier airbag wheel with an aftermarket wheel?

I am looking into replacing my stock airbag wheel with a Grant Evolution wheel. But they don't make an installation kit for any car that comes with an air bag. Has anyone ever replaced thier airbag with a grant wheel? How did you do it? Thanks!

Hey, I put a grant on mine, but it didn't have an airbag. But what I thought you should know is that if you replace it with one that doesnt have the bag, you have to tell your insurance company, and i think it goes up. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but thats what I heard from a lot of people. just thought it might be good to ask around before you do anything. good luck!

tell the insurance comany??? fck no, why do they need to know. you wont have a case against gm if you get in a wreck though for the air bag not going off. there is a big law suit brewing from what i have been hearing from the insurance grape vine, because of older gm air bags not going off when they should.

you can do this pretty easy. the reason they dont make a kit is becasue you have a second clock spring for the airbag wires, which is in the way. to solve this, just unplug it and take it out. then the mounting kit should work. you may also have to remove your airbag light or just unplug the air bag module so you dont have that damn yellow light glaring at you.

good luck

thanks

I don't know about the inspections. I've had my car for 6 years, and I've never had it inspected. But then again, I also live in the buttcrack of nowhere.

To remove the airbag you have to, according to the manual, disconnect the pos battery cable, pull the SIR fuse, and disconnect the yellow SIR wire at the base of the steering column. It's not hard. Then there are 4 T30 (I think) torx bolts holding the airbag in, that you take out from the back of the wheel. Try to not keep your face over the module when you do that. Then just pull the module off, disconnect the wires, and you're done. I've done it without any trouble, but I've heard that these things are really touchy, and really powerful. I read an article about a guy who set it airbag side down, and set it off connecting the wires to a battery. The module went about 100 feet up, so be careful with it.

i think the airbag wheel actually looks better than the non air bag wheels. I wouldnt mess with it if i were you, besides it's there for a good reason.

I tend to think that the airbag wheel looks good too, but the black cover over my airbag is slowly peeling off, and I can't get it to stay on, I've tried. Due to the price of replacement airbag modules, it would be cheaper to just replace the whole wheel. That, and I'm tired of spraining my thumbs to hit the horn

check ebay, i'm sure you could find a good deal on an airbag in good shape. I know what you mean about the horn though, sometimes it pisses me off, lol

If you autoX dont get a airbag. I had a friend that had a blow out while racing (didnt 10-80 or anything, no damage at all infact) and the airbag whent off. Cost him like 600 in medical to fix his nose.

i guess you would have to order the grant adapter plate that was for the air bag style shaft. they appear to be a little longer, therefore the addapter would be a little thicker.

hoe this helps

thanks

You can use the install kit offered for a pre-airbag car as the steering column is identical once the wheel is out of the way. I have a Grant Formula GT wheel and the only thing I had to do was put a washer under the column cover to prevent it from rubbing when turning.

The hell with the horn button. I gave up on that along time ago. I just use the finger and the gas pedal for attention . The other thing I hate about my wheel is the size of it. Im always hitting my hips with my hand when the *** end is slidding all over the road sometimes it gets stuck there and my heart jumps out of my chest to help straighten it out. I gonna repalce my wheel with a 7" chrome chain wheel.

I don't know what kind of car you have, so this may not apply to you. My 91 Firebird has the same problem with the airbag and the horn. The car is so low to the ground that idiots in trucks are always coming into my lane on top of me, so not having a horn really sucks. I just got on eBay and bought a wheel from and 89 Formula. It looks just like the airbag wheel, but it has no airbag and the horn will work. If you have a firebird you might try that. If you have a Camaro the same wheel might also work, but you'll have to live with it saying "Pontiac" in the center!!
