Cavalier Seats installed

Well I was wandering around a pull your own parts yard looking for defroster vents and speaker grills to make a custom dash for the Camaro and I found a set of mint '98 Cavalier seats. Asked the guy how much and he said $30 for the pair. Needless to say I grabbed them. I ended up pitching the Cavalier tracks because they were to high and didnt bolt down to the Camaro right. However, the Camaro's tracks bolted up perfectly with the Cavalier seats, no modifications neccessary. I believe I am one of the first people to do this, or at least I haven't seen pictures. The seats sit a little lower to the ground and they might go back a little farther but not much. They are back all the way in the pictures. What do you think?

the seats look great. i do however feel sorry for anyone who attempts to sit in your back seats.

Pontiac Design team meeting...early 1981...

" I know, lets make this really cool car that everyone will want to cruise around in. Then we'll make the back seats really tiny so nobody can get in the back. WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!!!!"

I'm not really liking it. They don't seem to fit the car. They might look a little better if you vacuumed up a bit

Did you also swap the back seats, they almost look the same. I also have cavalier seats but they are alot older than those. Looks nice though.

Well I think they match the car great, concerning the material and what not, but just the shape of them to me doesn't match the car. Not bad at all though

I like the way they fit alot, although I am a bigger guy(6'0" 300lbs) so others might not think the same. Back seats are stock, for the car so they don't match but I think it looks fine. I drove around for about 30 min today and they felt good to me.

You'd be surprised at just how many GM interior parts will interchange between cars...

Yes his post was serious. I've seen those seat in the junkyard before (trashed though).
The steering wheel wasn't something special only to firebirds either. GM recycles crap through whatever cars they can. I've seen that steering wheel on a few different pontiac cars in the junkyard as well as the transport/lumina apv minivan thing.

Both of my 94 Sunbirds had that steering wheel. I am not too fond of it. My 88 Formula has that same wheel too.

Yes I am 100% serious. That is a picture of my car's interior. GM tries to use the same parts on as many cars as possible. The 'GTA' seats were not easy to find, they only seem to be in Gramd Am GT's with lots of options, like the fully loaded ones. However, the steering wheel is a no-brainer. Next time you're at the junk yard, go look in 80's pontiac mid-size cars (grand am, grand prix, even sunfire), and you'll see that steering wheel (along with base firebird seats) in almost every one.

My stock 83 steering wheel is in near perfect condition, however I don't like it much. Its really smooth , and is hard to grip with sweaty hands (my A/C doesnt work). My new steering wheel is kinda 'squishy' and you can grip it good. I like to use this as a general rule of thumb for Gm car parts from around the same year: "If it looks like it will interchange, it probably will". Pretty much all GM car passenger seats will swap between vehicles. However, You WILL need to re-use your seat tracks. I simply unbolted the Grand Am seat tracks from the seats, bolted up my firebird tracks, and they went right in. This doesnt mean you can take simply any GM car seats, though. Even though the tracks will bolt up, and they will bolt in your car, they must physically fit inbetween the doors and the center console. For example, if you go get some giant-*** leather cutlass seats, sure your tracks will bolt to them, but the seat itself is not going to fit the space in your car. I knew these would fit however, since they came in GTAs.

300hpse: The dash swap is very straightforward. I would not recommend doing it alone though, because it would be a pain to hold the new dash in position while you bolt it in. Its not hard at all, only took about 2 hours. The new position for the dimmer switch is not a problem. You just pop the wire connectors in their new places, no splicing needed. You will need to get the wiring harness for the 85-92 center console, its different from the 82-84. All you have to do though is splice the new console harness to your existing wiring. your old window switches, headlight swtich, dimmer switch, and even gauge cluster will bolt right in. I went ahead and got the headlight, dimmer, and window switches with the stuff too, since they are grey instead of black. I wanted it to look like it came that way. Basically, if you can install an aftermarket radio, you should be able to do this swap.

I also got those same GTA style seats and the Formula style steering wheel from a turbo Grand Am. The steering wheel is leather too!! Seats were really dirty but not all torn up--once I cleaned them they were mint!! Not bad for $20!! steering wheel w/column was $5!!

another view of the seats...couple people wanted to see the fabric diffrences better(and I cleaned up the car a little). This pic also gives a better view of the drop in height of the seat.

Yesterday the recline mechanism decided to croak on my 85's seats so i'm at this junkyard looking for it or a 4th gen seats after i find out they want 12.99$ per seat leather cloth whatever they're all 12.99$ there was a cavvy with a good set of seats looked liek someone had just taken the covers off of em from the factory. I remembered reading about you doing it but i didnt actually read this post just saw the pics. So i'm at the junkyard measuring the mounting stuff going this isnt going to work so i blow it off until today when i actually got real interested and READ you're post to find out i have to swithch the tracks and everythings gravy. Long story short tomorrow on my day off i'm going to spend it at the cavvy at the junkyard pulling the seats. My question is do the back seats work in ours i doubt it i'm going to check out my buddies cavvy to see before i go. Expect pics by monday.

irocbirdbuilder: The back seats wont work because they are a single bench. Most, if not all, FWD cars have a bench in the back because they dont have to worry about hte driveshaft going to the back of the car. We do, thats why we dont a bench in the back.

i realized that last night when i found an inetrior picture of a cavvy and found it was a bench in the back. I really am not to worried about the back matching the front so i'm going to just do the front. Everyone whose interested in the car has pointed out how the drivers seat is in bad shape so i figure with kinda a custom seat thing going on it will go easier. Couldnt get to the yard today had to go spend some time with my woman although i offered if she wanted to go junkyardin with me but she wasnt to pleased so i am going tomorrow after i get off work i mow lawns at like 6am for my other job so i should be done by about 11 should be able to get seats and in and all done by about 4 if everything goes as i hope it will. Then i can take a nice cruise with my buddy to test em out.

i love how you can interchange parts so much with gm, i saved this awsome steering wheel from my Z-24, i love the red bowtie in the middle and it has grips and its squishy (my ac was taken out long long ago), and no comments on the missing carpet please, i know i dont have one, if i didnt break my windshield by sitting on it... , anyone have a carpet for a poor, jobless camaro driver

After careful inspection of those Cavalier seats, with all due respect, I don't like them at all.

They look more bland to me than the original seats. They look cheap to due to the vinyl on the back and the headrests.

Just personal taste.

They don't look half bad; they certainly have more side bolstering than I'd expect for Cav seats. They don't look too cheap either...they are a bit bland though.

So do all theses seats that were listed above, just bolt right in??? if so could a list of all boltable seats be found if searched for... or listed?

Once you bolt the thirdgen seat brackets to the new seats they do. Most any seat from GM of the thirdgen era should bolt up, just make sure they're not too wide. You can bolt up pretty much any seat, as long as it fits between the console and hte door.
