Oh crap rust...
Oh crap rust...
Well I thought i fixed the only rust i had (under the hood near the strut tower) but it seems i was wrong.
My hatch has rust on the underside, near the latch... im not too worried about this, i was going to replace it with a lexan window and a fiberglass/polyurethane wing and base
...and here is the fun one. My car has T tops... the T bar is rusting from the top down, and a small amount has spread to the metal above the winsheild on the passanger side and in the middle of the roof over the back seat...
OK.... so, there is no way im getting this cut out and replaced... so for the time being is there anything i can do to stop the rust.
In the long run i will either do massive body work and turn the car into a hard top(probably not lol) or buy a newer body to throw my parts into.

Well I would sand it and prime it with 2k primer. They do make a rust converter that seems to work Ive tried it as a temporary stop the rust until I could do it right. I dont remember seeing any rust after it was coated and I was sanding soo..... They sell it at the parts stores I dont remember who made it just know its called rust converter and it comes out clear and turn the rust black.

problem is that midwest rust is not just surface rust that you can wire away its rot that will break off and leave holes in metal that you gotta fill or cut around and replace with new metal, different kind of rust than out west or down south, its a wet kind of rust and more of a dry kind of rust found out west and south, its nust different, cant explain very well right now.
POR 15 is a great product for major jobs. They have a variety of items for filling holes and doing patch work w/o welding. I used their products in a few places to fill holes and basically rebuild small unstructural sections of my car.
As far as rust that is more than surface rust but less than a hole the product is made by Permatex and any parts store has it, usually by the bondo. One step process that turns rust black and is paintable. I don't know how well it actually kills it or prevents it from coming back but from what I see, it works.
High Performance Pontiac had a great article on POR 15 just a few months ago and that's what got me started. They have knowledgeable advisors on the phone too. Give them a try.
Hope this helps.
