Headliner Repair for the Do-it-yourselfer

DONT!!!!! especially on ttops, maybe some of you are good at arts and crafts, other like i make a total mess and wish they had left it drooping.

i seriously wish i had digital pics of the carnage. this is horrible, ..well not HORRIBLE but, well, ..lets just say those 90 degree turns --on t tops-- is a biotch. i cut the material too short, showed bare edges of foam, now i have a patchwork job.

however with the t tops on it looks great! heh.

i know theres aplace who sells the t top headliner foam thats covered in any color you want, i just cant remember the web wite --help?--

it is also a bit pricey, 220 i believe. --said screw that-- places also do the headliner here for 200 bucks, also...screw that.. i guess ill just leave the headliner on this time and leave massive slack and tuck tuck tuck.

i thought it would be a good idea to take the headliner off and do it, which yes, its the only way unles syou want spray adhesive all over the place but yeah. i gotta figure a way around gravity for that one. perhaps just flipping the car over would work?? BLAH

ill get pics of this horrid job asap , someone has to laugh at my misfortune and LEARN!!!! shell out the 100 bucks its worth it.

then again if you were willing to do that, you wouldnt own a thirdgen. oh well.. thats my Moronic job of the day.

Jeez... mine came out great, and for less that $30, as did my homemade sunshades. 'Course, I used to work in an upholstery shop.

$125 for a headliner job isn't all that bad. The majority of the cost is in labor, not materials. The adhesive, fiberglass patching, and headliner material probably costs about $20-$30 all together. Taking out the headliner is NOT a 5 minute job. You have to remove a number of trim pieces and the visors, not to mention an overhead console if you have one, and usually end up needing to replace clips as they break. Once the headliner is actually off all the clips, it takes 5 minutes just to get the damn thing out of the car without snapping it in half. The patch work has to be done first and dried so the board is stronger, then the adhesive and material have to be applied at the same time in small strips. It's a pain in the ***, believe me, when you only have two hands. And that's for a hard-top car... I haven't even attempted my t-top headliner yet. Throw on drying time for the adhesive to cure (about 12 hours), and then you have to reinstall it.

Bottom line, this is not an easy task when you do it right. Go spend the $125; it's worth it if you don't have the means necessary to do it right yourself. Read my posts here if you want more information: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=127525

My theory - if you're going to spend $125, just shell out $170 and get a pre-covered ABS board. That way you don't have to worry if the old headliner breaks when you remove it.

Amen. I did, haven't looked back since. Well actually I can't stop looking at it, an excellent product. I wouldn't dream of recovering the stock fiberboard, it would break and look not half as good if I did recover it, and then during install it would break again and I'd throw it out and buy the ABS headliner anyway.
Doing a headliner is a PITA, period. It really helps when you eliminate things that can go wrong and ruin the whole project. Spend the $159 and get the good stuff, and never have to worry about it again. IMO.

Thanks goodness home-ec was a required class in my middle school. My headliner turned out pretty darn good.

As for ABS boards.

you know, thats funny as hell, cause it literally only took 5 mins to remove he old headliner board, without breaking it, and i put it back in, in 5 mins, without breaking it....if it takes you longer than 10 mins to remove a headliner board, you prolly shouldnt own a camaro, in any event the guy said hed do it for 70 bucks if i took the headliner board out myself.....so uh , guess ill do that.

i used to build complex speaker boxes for a living and had to carpet them, way harder than a headliner, but it was also CARPET, you can fix errors in carpet very easily due to it being semi plush, ..hard to patch up material that is damn near see through to begin with....

I just ripped mine out for now. Looks bare, but I haven't figured out yet just how I want to attack the problem.

Shows a nice color of the original paint though.

Gotta get my door hinges done first.

Removing the headliner makes you want to get a new paint job the same day, huh?

I had a new ABS headliner on order and got so fed up with my old one, I just ripped it out. It was nice looking at the metal for a while with the paint that great.

yea, im deff gunna get a ABS headliner so i can just tear the chit out of the old one... I have several questions...
1) When you break the clips off, can you get them at a parts store?
2) Is the center consol hard to remove? I have the article, but they dont say "ah this is a biatch to remove" or "this is CAKE".
3) Trim parts... can i get clips for thoes or do i need to be careful.
4) Would black headliner look good in my car? I think im gunna go half and half with my dad on an all black hawks deal with visors, headliner, and sail pannels etc. i think a black headliner would look good, but i could go grey again to keep it stock... thoughts?

al, take your time, go slow and try not to break any thing you don't have to. any one with a basic under standing of gm engineering will take to this easily. console is easy. never needed to go out for missing or broken parts. took the headliner in and out of my white camaro 3 times-no prob. did my black iroc by cutting it. fast but messy-have a carvac handy if you cut it. you'll have to take down most of the trim to get at the corners anyway so it may be easier to just do it right to start with.

keep it stock-grey rocks

i have a new zz-4 cam for sale if you're interested-mike

1) Which clips would these be? The two clips near at the front of the headliner? The ABS boards don't need them. I actually saved the clips off my stock headliner board, thinking I might attach them to the ABS one, but it stays in well enough without them.

2) Not sure about that. Although, if you take your time, it shouldn't be that bad.

3) If you mean the clips on the A-pillar molding (white Christmas tree ones), I've actually seen them in some catalogue. Of course, being careful is the best way to do it.

4) Up to you. I personally like stock.

Good luck with it all.
