Not sure if other people are having rust problems in this area but it might help to see how I approached it. When I bought the car it had hotchkis subframe connectors welded in. I believe this contributed to the rust due to the sloppy installation by the previous owner.

Thanks for the compliments, It was my first shot at this sort of repair. I would reccomend anyone who is serious about trying to tackle this sort of thing to do some research on hammer forming. I made all of the patch panels using very simple hammer forms. A tabletop beltsander and a angle grinder are also invaluable tools. I chose to butt weld and grind whenever possible which meant extra time on the sander and grinder but I think the results are worth it.
