85 MPH spedo to 185 MPH spedo

I have a 87 Camaro SC with the 85MPH Spedo and . My friend has a 89 RS with a 185 spedo . Will I be able to swap a 185 spedo. with out replacing the cable or the unit on the trans.

our cars never came with a 185 speedo. some of the later ones had a 145 though. it should be all the same as far as i know. just disconnect the cable from the trans before you remove the old speedo. it will make removal-installation a lot easier.

I don't know if it is the same, but in my '91, you just pull the old panel and replace it with the new panel. Printed circuit board on back.

No need to touch the tranny. Just remove the old speedometer and replace it with the new speedometer. You unclip the speedo cable from behind the speedo with a long screw driver reaching up from under the dash.

Didn't the cable driven speedo's stop after 88? I thought 89 was an electric.

I think firebirds were different but in camaros it was cable driven up until 90 when it got the new dash design and the electric speedo.
