I have this same question. Is it spring loaded? And is there any way to change it or re-coil it?

One way to find out... take it apart and see if you can figure out how it works. If you can't, just put it back together and you are back where you started.

were there any cloth covers? My mom's daytona has a cloth one with Daytona embroydered on it. I thought it would be cool to have one like that with IROC-Z on it.

was it in the car when you tried it or was it out of the car.If it was out of vehicle it may not work because the ends are pushed in when its installed in your car. This allows it to recoil.Try it installed if it wasnt already. If it still doesnt work you can try to fix it.Ive taken apart & fixed 2 of these & its a 50/50 chance to fix.Had to retry 2 or 3 times each to get it to work.Theres not a lot in there.just springs(3) & plastic retainers.First roll out the cover. The tricky part, the end caps are riveted to the squared ends that mount to the car.remove the rivets, then turn the end cap to release it,look down the slot of the plastic piece that end cap was on,there is a small pin that you have to remove.Once thats done, remove the plastic item along with a spring & a round plastic piece.Do the same for the other side.slide out the cover thru the groove its in(if its in your way).Sometimes the springs in there will unlatch.you have to reattach those springs.then reassemble it.Once reassembled.stand up & push ends together as if it were installed in vehicle, turn the tube on way or the other to see if it wants to recoil. If it does, hold it in place so it wont turn & reinstall the cover.reinstall end caps (make sure the slot in end cap aligns with the cover when recoiled.

I took my old one apart after I found a replacement shade. They are not repairable or servicable.
