sand and primer
hey i just got my car and it looks really ****ty cause the front end had to be replaced and its red when the rest of the car is purple and the old paint is scraped up and the front end is full of chips so i was wondering how tough it would be to take each individual piece , like hood then door and **** like that and sand and primer each piece until i get it all done and also i was wondering how much does primer cost and how long will primer not covered in paint last cause i dont have the money to paint it but i figure primer looks better than it does now.
Thanks Mitch
PS. wrote this in class so if it doesnt make sense sorry

You can leave it in primer as long as you want, however you don't want to drive it that way, in the rain etc. Primer is porous, which means the water will absorb right into it, which means rust, which sucks.
laquer primers are porus, epoxy and urethane primes are not. i am an body man. The best thing to do is to go an get a spray gun from e-bay, or harbor freight.com, get their HVLP gravidy fed spray gun. Go to a pats store and ask for epoxy primer. Epoxy primers are strong and very durable... I used that on my car, i put a coat of epoxy on then a urethane high-build primer surfacer so i could wet sand and make everything smooth and fill in minor defects. Go get an epoxy primer. I used ICI valupro. Very good **** for the price, it is mad cheap and ICI is a brand name, but they got bought out by PPG and i think it is the same paint line as PPGs OMNI. go to google and search for ICI valuPro.

so what your saying is i can go like from part to part from like the hood to the corner panels to the doors and so on and take each piece and sand down past the primer (correct) and then all i gotta do is spray on that ICI valupro stuff and i can drive around in the rain and **** with no problems correct... im looking for the cheapest way possible here so if anyone has any other ideas i would love to hear them but i just want the car all one color even if it is grey...
thanks

I can directly relate to your topic for sure... I am currently in the process of a complete restore on my Iroc and its been alot of work. I bought some bumpers and ground f/x that were different colors. I wanted to sand them all down to the original plastic, for the exact reason you have just mentioned.
The sanding process has taken me 1 MONTH of working every single night with a 3" air DA sander. Thats for the bumpers, ground f/x and door pieces. Unless you are prepared to spend some major time and you have a big ole compressor capable of powering a DA for extended periods, dont even consider this.
Now if your base coats are acceptable and you want to paint over them, thats a different story. You can just scuff and paint. But that doesnt sound like what you wanted to do...
If you want any tips, just drop me a message..
