Spoiler Question
Spoiler Question
Ok, I'm working on converting my 92 camaro from the stock 3 piece fin spoiler, to a firebird spoiler. I like the look, and it's something subtle and different. I picked one up at a yard for $35, and sold my camaro spoiler for $36 or something, so so far, so good. I'm taking welding classes, and the instructor's giving me some pointers on getting me ready to weld closed the old spoiler holes from the camaro spoiler. I'm going to make a template decklid out of cardboard, and test the fitment on that before I drill new holes, so I think I have everything squared away....
Now the firebird spoiler that I got from the j/y, it seems to hold water. There was quite a bit that leaked out when I took it out of my truck, seemingly from the edge of the deck part of the spoiler. Is this normal? I mean is there any reason why I should want air to flow through here? There only seems to be a leak on the one side.... Or should I fiberglass all the holes closed before I paint it? A buddy said just leave it and drill a small hole under it for drainage, but I don't want water dripping on my paint, either.

If it is the spoiler I am thinking of (the wrap around?) it has a seam all the way around it (top and bottom pieces) but it has other holes in it too where the clips go that hold it down in the front. You could put RTV in the holes for the clips and install the bottom half while the RTV is still wet, then run a bead of RTV along the parting line of the spoiler and install the top while wet (mask off the 2 halves to keep the RTV off the paint)
This will effectively seal the spoiler. you may want to get some dessicant bags to put in the spoiler (hot glue in place) to take care of condensation. Just make darn sure you have it sealed up tight or you'll have a mess on your hands.

The leak is on the edge of the deck part. I'm not sure if it's towards the front or the back of the spoiler, I didn't really check at the time.
Nope, it's this spoiler:
