The 90 Model Year door has the square holes to mount it in the inner door skin. For older models I'd take measurements from a friends Firebird, then locate the door pocket on my door and hold in place temporarily with Duct Tape. Drill through the holes and screw in place with sheet metal screws. On my 90 Camaro I discovered the holes were already there. I found a license plate mounting hardware kit at the auto parts store which had the square plastic plugs and screws to mount it.
