power window motor

i am about to replace the power window motor in my 91 Camaro RS. I am just curious as to how i would go about doing this. i.e. tools, procedures, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

its been about 4 years since ive done it, but i can give yo a general overview...

there are 3 large Torxes holding the door handle on... take thoes out

take out the torxes holding the handle, power lock switch, ect trim.... careful, some are fake plastic...

now use a panel popping tool to pry the panel off... you can use 2 screwdrivers if you are extremly carful, but the tool is only 4 dollars, and well, if you do the screwdriver thing, you will mess up ATLEAST one..if not more... with the tool, its almost impossible to mess up any.

the panel is held on by these lil plastic door trim tags... they're shaped like this:
Code:
   ___________

=========|=====      door panel
   ___________
       \ /
       \ /
       \ /
       \ /
now that flat top part is inside the door piece... the stem goes thru the door, and the lil finned stem is pushed into a hole in the door metal... when you pry back with the tool, it pushes on the part of the door panel with the plastic behind it and it pops out.
if you pry on just the door panel it will pull thru the cardboard

anyhoo, once you get the door panel off, you'll see the motor...
tape the window to the car.. use 3" masking tape so you dont damage the paint. do it so the window will not fall on its own.... make it nice and strong.

now, i forget where they are exactly, but some large rivits will have to be drilled out. then the whole window sissor assmembly with the motor comes out..... to get it off the rail under the window, roll one end off, then the other...

now heres the tricky part...
there is a strong spring in there... when the motor comes off, the spring will try to spin the arms... if yuo are lucky, the arms line up so that there is a hole in both of them to stick a bolt thru... do that to secure them...

then drill the rivits out for the motor.
remove the motor.. carefull, because the arms will try to move when it comes out...

then put the new one on... pop rivit it on, or used the supplied bolts most motors come with... USE LOCKTITE if you use bolts. you dont want to do this again anytime soon.

for the other larger rivits, a glass replacement shop should rivit them for yuo cheap, ( i did this all in their parking lot because they had the rivit gun)
otherwise, you can use some bolts and nuts....

the panel just pops on. everything else is self explainatory....

once its out, you have to drill the pop rivits holding the

The proper way to do this after you get the door panel off is.

1. lower window halfway (this will align the two bolt holes in the window regulator cross bars) and insert some rubber door stops at three spots on the inside of the door to hold the window in place.

2. remove (3) screws frow window track at rear of window, turn approximately 180 degrees and remove it . might be a little tight but it will come off with no problem.

3. disconnect power cable to window motor.

4. knock center pins out of rivets holding motor and window regulator in place with a punch. Next, drill out rivets using a 1/4" drill bit.

5. now push motor and window regulator towards the rear of the door so that the rollers will come off the window cam tracks. motor and window regulator can then be removed from the opening at the rear of the door panel as one unit.

6. you will see a hole in the window regulator cross bars. Insert a bolt through this hole using two large washers and a nut. This a safety precaution because there is a spring on the window regulator that has a lot of tension on it which will cause considerable damage (possibly to you) if the motor is removed without something to hold the bars in place.

7. The motor is held to the window regulator with four 3/16" rivets or, if it has been changed in the past, it might have four 3/16" screws or bolts. Either is acceptable, I prefer the screws myself as it mades replacement easier. If it has rivits, knock out the center pin of the rivit with a punch and then drill the rivits out with a 3/16" drill bit and remove the motor.

8. If it is a new motor, you might have to run a 3/16" drill bit through the bolt holes so the rivits or bolts will fit. Install the new motor on the window regulator in the same position as the old one using either rivits, bolts, or screws and secure tightly.

9. Remove bolt from window regulator cross bars and re-install the window regulator and motor assembly in the door in the reverse order of which you removed it. The window regulator is secured to the door panel by four 1/4" rivits and reguires a large rivit puller to install them. If you don't have one, you might be able to borrow or rent one. Installing it with nuts and bolts will be a total pain in the a** since you will have so little room to work in. If you do use rivits, make sure they are steel shank rivits as the aluminum shank rivits are too weak for the stress put on them.

10. Re-assembly is in the reverse order of the disassembly. After every thing is re-assembled, remove the rubber door stops and operate the window up and down fully several times and check for adjustment if needed.

I just went through this about three weeks ago and I can tell you it was fun. Especially outside in the hot sun with no breeze.

Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!!
