Body Restoration of my 87 Z28..

335: great work. My car is also stripped. You mentioned your car is edged painted. Are you planning to put the doors and fenders back on for final paint? I am undecided myself on this for my car. You also already have the front on the car but it is my understanding it should be painted on its own with flex added to the paint.
thanks in advance for comments.

BigAl - theres always this summer man, or next year. Maybe Thirdgen nats? hhmmm
I will have more updated pics soon. Guys, another reason the price is so cheap is because I'm friends with the guy...so don't expect to go to your local bodyshop and get a full restoration for that price I should have said something earlier.
I'm ordering my new nose and rear bumper emblem tomorrow. When I get the car back, I'll hafta do alot of engine bay cleaning, put on GFX and spoiler, and put my interior back in.
More comments welcome, you guys will soon see a freshly restored thirdgen in this thread (in a few days)

I definately give you a for that... but one question. For $3000, you could ahve bought a mint loaded body, and swapped the engine over. Why did you choose to go with fixing the body?
I have tried this stuff in the past... and learned that no matter how much you replace, the rust will win in the end! I just hope it works out for you!

I replaced both quarters, both doors, both fenders, and the hood...there ain't much else that can rot out on the car, except for the uni-body itself hahaha!
But that is just my opinion

Good **** bro, im in the process of doing the same thing. Well i WAS in the process, then my motor blew and i cant get it over to my shop to finish up teh body work. But as soon as i drop that ZZ4 in, its back on, total resto and im painting it well, there is no name for it, im mixing it myself, but its gonna be blue....
How come you didnt take off the rear hatch. Did you get enough paint around the top or you didnt even paint that far?

Out of curiousity, when a car is "jammed" and "edged" like that before the rest of the painting, are the jams and all clear coated also? If they are how is the rest of the car painted without the paint being uneven at the seam of the original clear coat if you know what I mean? Or if the jams aren't cleared will the color coat hold up by itself? I'm in the process of painting my car myself. I have it primed and am wondering how I should do the base/clear coats.

i think what he was saying is that the jams were sanded down, the car was jammed and edged, then teh rest of the car is sanded down so that when all of the other paint is put on it is even with the jams paint and it isnt' all uneven and then once the whole car is painted then it is cleared all at once, i believe that is how it works
am i right on this one ?

All of you are wrong. jambs are painted and cleared. Thats it for them, once the rest of the car is ready for paint, they are taped off and thats it, no paint or anything get on them....i do this every day so i shoudl be right, or at least i hope...ahahha

maybe you are right, and probably are
i was just taking a guess at that, i just thought that is how it would be done, made the most sense to me, but i guess i am wrong if you paint cars for a living ? but if you do the jambs and clear it nad then tape it off, wouldnt you be able to see lines were the 2 different cleared sections were wehn you are done ?

White91, thats what I was trying to ask up top but I just didn't know how to describe it. So the jams are painted with base and clear, then the little overspray onto the rear quarter(like in tunedport's pics) is painted over and all is sanded down even in the end?

Well, there can be a little line when you tape of the jambs, but not the way i tape t off, i guess practive makes perfect. But for a perfect job we use this 3M stuff thats like a half inch roll of spunge with adhesive on one side, its makes the paint clear line so smooth it looks like its never htere. But regular people never notice the tape lines, its real hard to, even for me....
And i work at my shop 6 days a week, body work paint, cutting cars in half, whatever i can get my hadns on, so im full of **** to talk about.

charged350: Since you are in business. Would you suggest painting the pieces individually (hood, doors fenders, gfx) then putting them back on the body, or should the parts be assembled on the car and then painted as a whole? I would think it would be best to at least leave off the gfx but i would appreciate your opinion.

if you are changing the color, you have to take of the doors and pre shoot them into the new color, if repainting original or whatever color it is now, leave it all on the car, cept for the ground effects, doors stay on, fenders stay on. If you were doing a show car then you would rip it all off and preshoot the insides of hte fenders the nose and doors and trunk. But i highly doubnt that the case. In any matter, leave it all on the car, why, one reason, damage during reassembly. It will happen, so just paint it with the gfx of and thats it.

Any idea how much of the $1500 was spent on the windshield repair? Mine leaks from the seals and I assume it is rusted like yours underneith. I am afraid to even look. I may just end up using clear silicone to seal it off and put a new trim strip on and call it quits.

When he removed the windsheild, it looked pretty solid...well that was until he sprayed the metal with a sandblaster, and then it looked like swiss cheese. After that, he cut out all the bad spots, and welded in scrap metal so there would be no more rust. After that, the windsheild had to be reinstalled...with a new gasket. I'd assume its a pretty hefty sum to do all that.
The car is getting painted tonight. I'm gonna have a little "surprise" for you guys when I show you the pics when the car is all together. That's all I'm going to say for now

It's painted, and got clearcoated last night. He wants to wait a couple days for the paint to harden, and it should be wetsanded and buffed on Thursday. Hopefully I'll have it back this weekend and I'll be sure to grab some pics for you guys
My dad saw it last night, he said everything looks mint... theres a few dust specs in the paint but that should wetsand out. He also said the bowtie emblems on the side of the cowl hood came out looking really good too.
I also ordered a new nose emblem and rear bumper emblem, which should be here in a few days.

Man, that is a really nice camaro you have coming along, VERY NICE. Can't wait to see the end result.
Anyway, since I wrecked myn, I'll be replacing fenders and having my unibody straightened out and repainted, if it don't cost too much. If it does, someones going to have a nice 3rd gen project car.

January 16th 2004, the car is now finished. I have to pick up the bumper and one door ground effect on Monday since my bodyman didn't like the way they came out. The car isn't clean yet, it got a little dirty from the ramptruck ride but I will clean it later.
Here's the pics

THAT IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! Awesome job! That is definitely now one of the best looking cars on this board. You should be very proud, those flames are sick!!! Absolutely sick!!! I love it! I do think the cowl and the high rise spoiler match very well. Also, the silver chevy emblem up front is a very cool touch. Get some new wheels and tires and that is a show quality car! Are you planning on doing anything with interior? If so, that paint job is going to be hard to top (j/k). Again, Congrats man, I'm jealous....
