HVAC Control Problems
On my 83 Camaro whenever i try to turn the heater on there is a hissing sound coming from the HVAC control panel and the air is directed out of the defroster vents. That drives me crazy and eventually it comes out of the floor. That hissing sound occurs on every position but MAX AC. Otherwise it hisses and blows out the defroster vents until it decideds to switch to the correct outlet. Whats going on here? How can I fix this, please help ASAP! cory

The problem is common to thirdgen cars. If you'll do a seach, you find considerable info. Kansas?

There is a little wheel on the vaccuum selector that is probably loose. That is leaking out the vaccuum (the hissing you hear), and since the actuator doors can't get the vaccuum they need to open and close, only the default setting will work, which is defrost.
The easiest way to fix it is to just replace the heater controls.
Good luck,
Matt
