Fixing minor rust, over a big area, pics inside
My car has VERY minor surface rust. Mostly from a poor last paint job. My car is NOT a show car by ANY means what so ever. Its my daily driver. rain shive whatever.
There are a few spots that need attention. I sanded out a rusty spot on my door, and applied some rust protectant paint. However now I have a huge spot on my drivers door a different color. Painting the whole car is NOT an option.
I cannot get to a booth, and I need to do this by rattle can. I can get the paint matched and put in a rattle can tho.
Anyway here is a quick pic I shot today:

I dont wanna start messing with bondo and that sorta stuff, I just need it protected and looking close to the same color as my car. I'm just wondering if I sand that down, put on some rattle can primer. And rattle can paint over it, will it look like crap. Or will the two colors kinda blend? Just wondering if I can get away with just hitting the one spot, or do I gotta do the whole door?
And if I do the door, can I do it with my rattle can paint, and will it look ok?

Get some wax and grease remover(PREP-SOL by DUPONT is good)Wipe down the lower part of the door real good.
Grind the rust off with 80 grit, then feather(smooth, blend) the spot with 180 or 220.Wipe with cleaner again. Then spot prime. a couple of coats primer on the spot. Next tape off the rubber door guard and from your stripe at the bottom down. Wet sand the whole lower door with say 600. Wipe again.Prime lower door. Wet sand lower door with 600 again. Wipe down again. Paint.

i would use "vary prime" on that rust. That kind of rust is pretty hard to get rid off, and vary prime actually "eteches" itself into the metal. It's also called "etching primer" and it looks kind of green....you might just ask a body shop or an automotive paint shop about it.....
