The motor continues to run because the gear nut is bad. The worm drive shaft of the motor turns the gear nut, which in turn raises and lowers the lift rod which is attached to the latch portion of the pull-down unit. The motor is turned off when the reversing switch is tripped by a tang on the lift rod. Since the gear nut is bad the lift rod won't be raised or lowered, so the reversing switch will not be flipped to turn off the motor. Replace the gear nut (and any other items you find broken or damaged) and it will be fine. You can find any parts you need to repair this on my web site. You can use the repair instructions or the Tech article I wrote on repairing them.
