side moulding question
I would like to take my side mouldings off of my car, but i do not know the best way to go about this. The car has been painted at some point and i was not the owner when i was, so i do not know if the car was painted wiht them on or off. If i do take them off and they were painted on the car is there anyway of putting them back on or would they be wrecked from taking them off ? what is the best way to take them off ? I think it will give the formula a cleaner look since it does not have any gfx's
I'm not a bodyman by trade, but messed with side moldings years ago on a 70 Chevelle. My advice: Don't mess with 'em. Paint will come off too, regardless of whether they installed by GM or sometime later. And the paint will not come off cleanly. IMO car looks great with them. And they will always look better than door dings.
ususally the best way to take them off is to run a scrapper right in it and get it off that way. most (good) body shops will take off the side molding before painting and just paint them separate. so you may get lucky and be able to get them off without revealing the previous color. I'd check to see if the paint looks continuous between the molding and the panels it's attached to. or you could try lifting an edge (do the bottomside so you won't notice later on, if you crack the paint) and see if some paint cracks between the two parts. if you don't see anything and it looks like the same color underneath go ahead and remove it very carefully (don't scratch the paint) and then get some adhesive cleaner/remover and take off the adhesive.
