I think it's just controlled by the switch to illuminate the rear hatch area (ie. not supposed to come on when the hatch is open or anything). I'm not really sure what you're asking, mine is controlled by a switch anyway...

Some models had a switch back there to turn the switch on & off. On my 89 Iroc, the light comes on when the rear hatch opens. My 85 Z28 had a switch back there to turn it on. It also did not have the electric hatch motor.

Correct. Prior to 1989 the hatch light was controlled by a manual switch. Starting in 1989 the light was turned on and off by the striker-sensing switch (small black switch next to the latch) of the hatch pull-down unit.

Are you sure it was 89? I thought my old 88 SC hatchlight came on when the doors and hatch were opened. My 87 has a switch that I don't remember my 88 having. Any 88 owners out there with have it either way?

my 88 Formula has a switch and the 89 Formula that i got my rear panel from didn't.
One of these days I'll cut the hole for the switch so I can use my light again.
