Some pictures of paint job in progress
Yesterday I sprayed three coats of base and one of clear on the shell of my camaro. It came out looking better then i expected. Although in pictures it almost looks like primer because it had only one coat of clear when the picture was taken and it needs to be wet sanded and buffed. I'm doing the other coats of clear today, just did one, waiting for it to dry then i'm gonna spray another.

If you'd like to see some before pictures check out my website in the sig.
I'll update the pictures in a few days when it's wet sanded and buffed.

That's actually the original hatch seal. The only weather stripping on the car that is staying because it's in good condition. I started cleaning those door vents with q-tips but decide to just blow off the dust with the compressor and then wipe it down. Maybe i'll clean them up more another time.
Tomorrow i gotta make a trip to the body supply shop and pick up a bumper repair kit to fix a deep scratch on the front nose and a low spot on the front spoiler, then i'll prime the bumpers and spoiler. Then thursday i'll prime the ground effects and fenders Then Friday i'll spray base and clear on all those peices. Saturday New York Car Show at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhatten
. Then sunday remove the hood and hood hinges and assemble what I can. Depending on my work schedule next week I should have the doors, hood and hatch done.

It looks very nice! I have one off-topic question. What are those vents in the door jamb used for? I haven't really taken a close look at them, but I can't think of what the heck they would do in that location!

Thanks for all the compliments guys.
Today I repaired a deap scratch and a low spot on the bumper along with a low spot on the front spoiler with some flexible bumper repair stuff. Then I primerd the rear bumper, front bumper and front spoiler. Also sanded down one of my doors, Had about a 1/4" of paint so i had to bring it down to the metal. I didn't get as much done today as I would have liked but still got some things accomplished. Tomorrow i'll be working on the doors some more, fixing a dent and preping the jams and hopefully priming them.
There was a deap scratch in that corner. I used a file to make a V, then cleaned it up and applied the flexible filler and sanded.

Did you use that 33gallon Craftsman compressor to do this?
how did it do? constantally running? I have a 33gal./6hp one and man when I use my air tools off it. Its always running.

The compressor worked well, wasn't on all the time while painting. I was using a DA today and it was on the whole time though.
Didn't get much accomplished today, basically spent the whole day sanding the doors down, found a lot of dings that i need to take care of on the door that appeared straight before sanding, figures. My new goal is to just atleast get the doors painted and hung sunday.

Well i finally got a chance to do some more work on the car...
There is still alot more work to be done but hopefully in a few weeks it'll all be done.
I need to redo the work on the doors that I did. It rained hard and was windy this past tuesday and caused the doors to get realy wet and rusted a little so i had to sand that down and now have to grind that bondo out and redo it on a day i will have a chance to paint it.

You're right, it does look like primer. No shine to it at all like there should be. Looks like it's going on too dry, try slowing down your movement or up the paint flow. It'll be less work in the end when wet sanding.

Well the nose and rear bumper actually came out shinny, i can see a reflection in it, i have a picture showing it that I'll upload later. I think i was painting it too dry, i tried to paint these peices a little more wet, got one run in the nose that i took care of already but other then that it came out nice.

The paint is from a 2004 Mercedes SL500, Brilliant Silver Metallic, PPG paint code is 35458.
Here is the picture i was talking about before, it didn't photograph that well but it's reflecting a red rag i'm holding next to the side of the nose. The white spec on the side of the spoiler is a paint flake that came off the masking and fell onto it when the clear was drying, i tried to get it off and just got stuck more, it should wet sand out, if not i'll redo the front spoiler eventually.
And here is another one, just because I love the way it looks

Don't run the color, but run the clear all you want
lol I saw one guy put the clear coat on so heavy on his truck that it actually had long drips off the bottom like icicles. Looked great after wetsanding though. Got a nice color on the car, can't wait to see it when it's done

paint it to match or black, don't cut it out. IMO
i love how that paint doesn't reflect anything hardly. It REALLY lets you see the car as a whole piece. I'm getting all new paint color schemes right now , thanx for the idear! Junior Member

That is a f'n great paint job. :hail:
I think you should paint the strip behind the insert black dont cut it out.
I dont think you will get much more shine out of it, if you look the sl500 you get the same look from the paint hardly any reflection unless its off of light. Its still a badazz paint job regardless.
Keep it up man

The paint booth is nothing more then one of those 10x20 portable garages that they sell at costco with a thick tarp on the floor. I did wet the floor before i painted. I don't have any actual ventilation, although there are flaps on the canopy that open when wind blows. It's basically like painting in a garage with a wet floor and a small window open.]
I should be painting the passanger side door tomorrow. I'll have pics if i do get to do it.

Painted and cleared it. Gonna try and mount it tomorrow.
I also managed to scratch it already. In the top right, behind where the mirror goes, hope it buffs out.

a couple of comments for ya:
1. You are panelizing the car - that is your painting the shell first, and doors separately. Watch out! I made the same mistake on a chevelle. If you are using a metallic paint (especially a pearl paint) it probably won't match the other sections, even though you use the same can of paint.
2. You are supposed to paint additional clear coats when the paint is still tacky. If you've heard the term "flash" it means the time when the paint is no longer soaking wet, and not quite dry either. That's when you apply the additional coats. If you wait until it's dry, you should wet sand it first (1000 or 1200 grit, lots of water), clean it, dry it REALLY good, then apply the clear.
good luck and nice work!

Why would the clear start pealing? I was told i have 72 hours after paint to put more coats on by the shop i bought the paint from. If it does, oh well though. Best thing about doing it yourself is you can redo it just for the price of supplies and time. If i had to repaint it i wouldn't be tearing it down nearly as much as i did this time.
edit: Just read the posts above... that sucks. Well hopefully it'll last a while before it starts pealing if it does. The shell was the only thing i waited on.

Infact, i gotta redo the door i did yesterday. It has pits from bondo that i didn't notice until after i painted and also found a ding that i never saw before.
yeah well there is always a window on this stuff , which is the time you can mess around before putting on the next coat and NOT having to scuff it up. I don't know what paint u were using but i have never heard of a 72 hour window. the best one i heard of was 12 hours and that was the martin senior clear.

btw, how much paint did you use, and what was the price per gallon? I've heard that a gallon is way too much, as you dilute it some with thinner so it doesn't clog, but this is coming from mr. shadetree mechanic himself lol

Well i'm not done but i don't think i'll be using the full gallon. I used omni and it was $120 a gallon. It was about 16 hours between those two coats. We'll see if the clear peals :/ . I mounted the door today. I'm going to repaint it tomorrow hopefully, along with the hatch and the passanger side fender. I'll have pics.

You should take those door jamb vents back off and clean them up with some Meguire's Natural Shine & Protectant and a toothbrush.
