Rear hatch strut problem.
My passenger side strut mount? has sheared off from the body, shoving my hatch out of line. Is there any way to fix this? I unbolted the strut from the interior where the mount sheared off, and I dont see any way to attach screws or anything. Also, how can I compress the strut when I go to put it back on? Thanks!

I will get back to you on how to fix the mount. In the meantime, there is no way that you will be able to compress that strut. You have to open the hatch and prop it fully open with something and then install the strut. If the hatch was opening when this happened, you are lucky it didn't do more damage. Pull the interior trim pieces in that area and take a look at it. Got a picture of it?

Ill take some pics and "try" to put em up(still dont know how). I was inside the car and the hatch was shut when I took the bolt out, the reason I did it from the back end is the screw is stripped out at the top of the hatch and it wont come out. So ill need to get a new strut then?

Ok, I ran took some pics and put them on my cardomain page, circled teh problem in red. Its the same problem on both sides of the mount, it basically has 2 ummm, id say rivits, but not quite, the portion that attaches the mount to the body goes right in between the body panels, so it doesnt interfere with the weatherstripping around the hatch. Anyways the pics can be seen on page 3. Thanks!

Thats the problem, theres no way to put in new fasteners, it looks like the mount was welded in some spots to the body and the upper portion that attaches to the hatch, the fasteners are part of the mount itself, and they are welded on it looks like. I was thinking maybe I could just drill some new holes, but it most likely interfere with the weatherstripping on the hatch.

need a better pick to see what your looking at, what is the other mount in the pic for? isn;t that where the strut goes. should be a verticle hole for the strut not a horizontal like your pic shows. are you sure that is where the strut was mounted.

here is a pic of mine maybe this will help you describe what your looking for
should say cargo cover,......... is this where your strut was mounted? no wonder it broke very light tack welds not ment for strut mounting. mount you strut on the heavy bracket and you should be good to go.

I may be wrong in this Jeff, but what I think you are looking at in the left side of the picture is the strut mount where it has been pushed forward after breaking or where he placed it for reference.

ahhhh ok now i see it. so let me take a look at mine and see what is holding it in place then.... be back.
ok mine is just tack welded two times on each tab that holds that bracket in. not sure how well a self tapping screw or two may hold that.
