IIRC the shifter **** is held in place by a circlip of sorts...if you remove the button from the centre you should see it from inside. Electrical tape is invaluable for reinstalling it though
The centre console is not hard at all to remove. The piece surrounding the ashtray and the one around the stereo come out first, and there are two or three bolts in the bottom of the glove box. The hand brake sleeve must also be removed but that's just a screw. Before you start tugging, remove the shifter indicator piece and you'll see another bolt holding the framework in, horizontally. You'll also need to disconnect the window switches because the cables aren't long enough to do it after removal.
I expect there's something I've missed, it's been so long since mine was out! Some things to get you started though.

shifter **** is held on by a metal staple in the front of the ****, closest to the dash. Shift into first, you can see it better. pry it out with a pointed tool, like an awl, or a thin bladed screwdriver. Then the **** slides straight up.
console is held down by screws inside the glove box, and you will need to remove the shifter plate and the radio faceplate, and you will see some more bolts. Be careful, the center 2 "screws" on the shifter plate are fake, don't try to undo them. take out all the bolts, remove the e-brake handle with an allen wrench, and it should all come loose.
edit: yeah, what he said
I type too slow, he beat me to it
P.S: no need to remove the button on the shifter, this is what I did my first time, disassembled the whole thing and still could not get the **** off, Lol! Just remove the staple in the front, and it will slide up and off.
