On a 1990 or thereabouts IROC, has anyone ever noticed underneath the dash overhang, somewhere under and to the left of the two central air conditioning registers that there's kind of an opaque lens that is not all that bright and dims along with the dash lights? I found it there and wondered what in the world Chevy was attempting to do with it or if it had an actual purpose; it's too dim to really light anything, and yet it's still looks like it was deliberately placed there. Anyone else have this on their car or an explanation as to what it is?

That's the blinker fluid indicator light. You need blinker fluid.

Blinker fluid? Is that an English term like Bonnet or Windscreen? Actually this light is out of normal sight and isn't on the instrument cluster... You have to look under the dash to see it.
Thanks anyway though.

You're probably right Kevin, I appreciate it. It's so dim though, I don't know what GM was smoking when they put it there.

It is indeed for lighting up the ash tray and HVAC/Stereo. On my GTA it is much brighter than on the Camaro and you can see it.

Not all cars have it, mine doesn't. I think it's part of the interior light group option, which I don't have.

Some Thirdgens came with Map Lights, and that's where they mounted. It's probably a standard mount, just the cars without the map light have just a dim light coming through. I know that 2 of my past camaros have had the same little light.

It is a #74 light bulb and its purpose was to light the area of the A/C controls and ashtray as a couple of members have mentioned. It is not an option in all the various models and years. The design of it also varies over the years. In my 89, it is a very small opening for the light to shine through while in a 92 model the opening is a little larger. In some later models, the light was located in the right side of the rear view mirror.

I have the same light; doesnt help at all with lighting things. I have replaced the bulb in it, but still stays dim.

I think the GM designers were "ahead of their time" and wanted to add excessive/uncessary decorative interior r*ice-boy lights with this one, but only got half way there, thankfully.

Incidentally, I heard that the guy who put it there now is a designer for Scion
