i am getting ready to do a 3 stage candy (hok) paint job. who has done it here that can give me some advise to insure the cnady goes on smooth and even.

not sure if candie did his or if it was done for him. Maybe jeff will chime in.

i thikn my biggest question at this point is it doable in a garagre with limited experiance?

and how do you shhot the candy i know you follow the length of the body and ignore all conturs. But is it front bumper to rear bumper pattern? does that make scence start spraying at the front of the bumper over the hood and roof down the hatch and over the rear bumper? or just each panel in the same direction front to rear.

Didn't spray my car in Tri-coats, but I have sprayed it..

When you do your mid coat keep your gun passes even and use close to a 75% overlap if you vary to much you will end up with light and dark stripes (not cool).

If you have limited experience. I would really do some practice first.

 

Candy is some hard **** to do right. The biggest part is the base coat. It must be flawless or it will show through the candy like a soar thumb. I never painted a whole car but did a motorcycle in school. It was the teachers bike and it had a white base. I spent more time on that sucker than a car should take.

But he is right you gotta over lap well and do it right or it will be awful in the end.

Candy is so fickle that your probably have a 75% chance of screwing it up. Until you have sprayed candy a dozen times. So just be careful, take it slow, don't rush and say a little prayer.

You may want to buy some sheet metal and test on it first. That is what we did in school. Till we were good enough to paint real bikes. We practiced on 4x4 sheets.

 

seen that sheet metal tip beore i will for sure try that first, i did get extra to practice with. i also heard after the order on another board that hok makes a kbc that mimiks candy i would if i should of just used that, they say it is less likely to mess up on sinces its a mid base. so you put a base coat in my case blue metalic, and then this candy base (cobalt, and then clear). i dunno i do know the chances of screwing up are high but i am always up for a challenge. Just wonder if this is more than a challenge

I did it to my car. I used house of color shimrin white base and silver pearl midcoat in rm clear. Thats the midcoat clear not the topcoat stuff so it is just clear base. Its easiest to use a lot of mid coat with a light mix of pearl/candy and spray four of five coats to get it all even. Anyways I practiced on the underside of the hood first and then i did the rad support to see how many coats and try some different mixes. I used too much on the rad suport and not enough on the hood so I split the difference on the car but i should have used more. Its so subtle and because the white is SO bright you must look close to see it unless its in low light or you are wearing sunglasses. No blotches or salmon effect though so I am happy with the result. Good luck
