I have a '98 Camaro console from an auto car. Can I simply swap the shiftplate for a manual one, or do i need to replace the whole upper console and install one from a manual car?

I already searched, but didnt find a definitive answer.

The upper console is one piece, so yeah, you just get the entire upper console from a manual car.
Lower part of the consoles are the same.

 

what zepher said, You have to replace the upper console to change it out to a manual console.

You can use the auto console though in a auto car, it just takes some work. You have to cut the mount plate off the transmission tunnel and mount the shifter straight to the floor and some other stuff. But its been done.

You will love the 4th gen console when you get it in though.

 

Oh, it also works with a B&M.
This happens to be in my brothers 96 Trans Am which was a 6 speed, but is now an auto.
I am going to put the B&M into my Formula and put the Formulas shifter into my brothers car since my dad is driving my bro's car and is having problems with the Megashifter.
