I measured for my cowl hood today, and HOLY $H!T
I don't have a straight edge that will go across the top of both fenders so I just used a piece of string and pulled it really tight and taped it to the fenders in front of the carb. Anyway, I got the final measurement, 6 freaking inches! I really don't want to run a 6 inch cowl hood cause like I had mentioned before it will be a street car. Now, I know a few compaines that make a 6 inch cowl, but only 1 of them is bolt on(no hood pins for my baby!). Visibilty will be an issue since there will be NONE! Anyway, I have come up with a few options on what to do so give me your opinion on what you think I would be the best....
1. Get rid of the 14x5 air cleaner and go with a 14x3 and use an X stream lid to pick up the additional flow I would have lost when going to a smaller air cleaner.
2.Take off the 1 inch carb spacer and carb studs and use a 14x4 air cleaner. NOTE: Removing the 1 inch carb spacer (4 hole style) will lose some low to mid range torque production.
3. Find an air cleaner that has a lower drop base for additional clearance.(Mine already has a 1.5 inch drop base)
4. Say screw it and just run the 6 inch cowl and not be able to see anything.
If anyone out there has been through this before and knows an *easier* way to do this please feel free to chime in at any time. Thanks, Paul Moore

Definetely don't do #4. A 6" cowl hood on a regular street car is too much, in my opinion of course.
I would try #1 first and then recheck your measurements. I'm not sure if you can get drop bases more than 1.5", but I'm no expert. How big of a cowl hood do you want? A 3" or 4"?

Also, don't forget that our hoods are not perfectly flat, there is some curvature to them in the middle. I bet you could get away with a 4" with a drop base and an Xstream lid.

your measurement is off... you can take 2.5" (roughly) away from that if you're measuring the front edge of a 14" air cleaner fender to fender with a flatedge(string) on a camaro.
get a 3" hood... DONT get the "extreme" aircleaner lid. the pleats from the lid make it have less room inside for the air to go straight to the carb.
also, the aircleaner lid is only sheetmetal. if its close, you can bend it a lil in the front to clear.
if you have to run a 3" aircleaner, fine.
lastly, the diff that spacer makes is the same as you remembering to goto the bathroom before you race. if the smaller cowl still wont clear, jsut take it out.

side note:
vic Jr with a 14x3" Mrgasket "daytona" drop base air filter and a holley 750 clear my 91 camaros RS hood JUST BEARLY.
when the engine is abused, the cleaner lid rubs on the hood slightly. not even enough to go thru the paint, but i can tell they touch.
so if you're 2 inches above that ( 1 inch more air cleaner, and 1 inch spacer) a 2.5" cowl would clear just fine.

Actually, MrDude_1, I have 2 inches of air cleaner plus a 1 inch spacer over the setup on your RS camaro so that would put it at 3.5 right? So technically, I could do a 4 inch and still have a little bit of room for engine movement, correct? 4 inches is the absolute largest that I want to run for the street. Maybe I should take my old hood and cut a hole in the middle, put it on, and then see how much higher the air cleaner sticks out of it.......
