91-92 camaro style aero wing won't fit on an 88 camaro shorty aero wing deck lid??

I was told by a few people that because I had the shorty style aero wing on my 88 camaro (RPO code D80 I think) that the 91-92 style high rise aero wing(RPO code D81), or E wing as I like to call it, should fit on there no problem. So I take off the old spoiler, and sell it on ebay to get the money to buy the other one. Well, after I get the spoiler it doesn't fit, and I sold the one that came on the car so now I have 6 holes in my decklid with no spoiler to put on it. Should I just drill new holes and mount it up and have a body shop fill the remaining holes? After some searching I read somewhere that the low rise aero spoiler was only available in 88 and that they were rare! I only got $40 for it on ebay! Any suggestions/opinions are welcome. Thanks, Paul Moore

Back up a step.

The wings are NOT directly interchangeable. The decklids for both Camaros and Firebirds were exactly the same from 82-92. The only differences were the wings available on them.

What you need to do is remove the old wing (which sounds like you already have), fill the holes, drill new ones for the 91-92 Z28 wing and the bolt the new one on. Painting were appropriate of course.

Questions?

^--- what he said. Or, if you don't like the idea of filling holes, find an unmolested deck lid from a junkyard like I did for about $15. In this case, you'll have to have the whole thing painted to match. Also, rare doesn't always mean valuable. So you weren't neccisarily ripped off. They weren't terribly common, but I haven't seen a big demand for them either... so i wouldn't expect them to be worth more than you got for it.

Agreed... they were rare-ish, but they look horrible. I hear they smell funny too.

True. Rare and Desirable can often be two TOTALLY different things.

Well, I wasn't so much concerned with the fact that I got 'ripped off', it's just that if I had know that all these problems were gonna happen, I would have kept the old wing on the car instead of selling it because the $40 I got for it was only about 1/3 of the amount Ineeded to buy a used factory aero wing(got it off of ebay for $125) The car is getting repainted so that was never an issue either. I have packing tape covering the old holes now so water doesn't get into the trunk/hatch area. Paul Moore

Well, look at it this way. You're in a bad situation... BUT, its better than most.

The wing you had, was the best wing to have when upgrading to the 91-92 wing. Why? Because the other style, the 3 peice IROC wing would've left holes on the rear 1/4 and you would've had MORE paint work needed...

So, look on the bright side... Fill in the lid holes, and put the new wing on.

Mine doesn't smell funny either J/K. Actually, I like the shorty wing better. Well, I like them about the same, but if mine is RARE, I think I will leave it b/c then I have a more unique car.
