how to cut up your hood?

Tried the search didnt give me what i wanted and i didnt feel like scrolling through THOUSANDS of posts to find it

OK i am going to buy a twin turbo hood for my gta in about a week or two and i was wanting to know first

1. The manufact. said of course that you have to fit them yourself and when i asked what to use they responded saying a SD (?) or block sander i believe...for those who have fitted a hood properly what is the best tool to use for the job.

2. What is the best method for cutting the hood flow spaces out so that the hood can be made functional...what tool and is there any specific technique so i dont screw up and waste 450 bucks?

3. What is the best material for the grill inserts? Where can i get it how much and what do i use to install them on the hood so that they will stay?

4. Finally whats a good method for averting water coming in through the rear open cowl and insert grills?

Just answer one or two if you want and im sure if enough people respond all the qs will get answered...just lemme know how you did your custom FUNCTIONAL hood

wait till paint for it

get yourself a dremel and a hacksaw blade

3. What is the best material for the grill inserts? Where can i get it how much and what do i use to install them on the hood so that they will stay?

go to homedepot, and get some expanded wire mesh, use glue

4. Finally whats a good method for averting water coming in through the rear open cowl and insert grills?

the rear is fine, water won't get in there, and as far as the inserts i wouldn't worry about it hurting anything

and the hood pinds just order them from summit, they have some good products

DA maybe? It's Dual Action, usually ran from a air compressor. makes quick work of something. my advice put the hood on, and see how much you need to take off. if alot use a da sander if a little block sand it.

1. SD: sanding disk? I think DA also... Don't paint it till you see if it will fit. Don't cut on the hood either.

To test fit get a friend to help. Take off old hood. Then take off the hood struts & lay down the hood hinges flat on the body. Then lay the new hood on and make sure it seems to fit right. Doinfg it this way will keep the hood easier to align. If all looks got then take hood off. Reattach hood struts now put on hood and attatch the hinges. Leave slightly loose for adjustment.

As far as finishing work....you will use a DA and sanding block to smooth the surface before paint. Tons of primer will be used to block sand it level. Use a fast build primer. Fiberglass is always wavey and needs tons of prep work to look perfect. You will need to use a guide coat of some kind to be sure you block sand the area level.

2. A cut off wheel on dremel for small holes a larger cut off wheel on a drill for larger holes...cut small and slowly, work out the hole to the size you want. Yopu can always cut out more....A dremel offers more control, but takes longer.

3. The home Depot stuff is gutter mess. Can work, but can also look cheap if not done right. Better to go to Autozone/adavance/pep boys and get the mess they sell for imports. Better looking stuff... To hold it on.... the best way is to fiberglass a fastener to the inside of the hood and bolt it on...but glue and do the trick to....JBWeld or a 2 part epoxy is better and far as strenth.

4. the rain is going to come in any holes you make in the front of a hood. You can baffle it to keep it from directly hitting the engine, or air supply for the intake. In the back it should not really come in that much....Most cowls I believe usually overhang the wiper cowl area. The water should hit there or teh windshild a& roll down there. The water runs down in into the hole below the mesh & out thru the factory drain holes. The rest normally runs down to the corner of the wiper cowl area.

My hood canme functional with baffles preinstalled with drain holes.

5. Check Summit....
