V6 to V8 swap, Difference between 82-85 & later guage clusters ?
Trying to get this switched over for a V8, and really can't find what exactly will fit.
Car has the stock 1985 V6 cluster in it now. (85mph)
The 86 & later have the oil, fuel, volt & water temp all in different places on the cluster, & I really don't ffel like butchering up the harness/plug to get these to work.
Was there ever a 115,120,140 or 160mph speedo offered in the 82-85 cars ?
I already have the correct V8 oil pressure unit needed for the swap. I will also be using the correct V8 "chip" for the tach.

I agree, I think you'll just need to bite the bullet and repin your I/P connector on the dash. I swapped a '91 120 MPH cluster into my '84 T/A and all it took was some time tracing the printed circuit boards on the two clusters and reading the factory service manual to find out which wires did what in the connector on the dash. The cluster I swapped in was actually from a V-6 so I used a Dakota Digital adaptor box to convert the V-8 signal to what the V-6 tach needed and it is fairly accurate in comparison to what my Holley Commander 950 ECU sees for RPM. It sounds like you've already got a handle on the tach issue though. To the best of my knowledge there were no cable driven speedos in the 'birds that went higher than 85 MPH, and I really think you'll be best off to swap in a whole cluster and just repin your connector, it's not that hard and you can revert back to the original pinning if you make note of what it is before you start the whole process. Now if you need a cable driven speedo, but want a higher MPH unit, I don't know what to tell you... That's just my
though, good luck with whatever route you decide to take!
Here's a quick pic of what my speedo and tach look like now...

So was your 91 cluster a cable drive speedo too ?
I "could" do the pin swap i guess, if I had to.
Your 84 looks sharp, my 85 T/A is the same color. This next project is a 85 Firebird V6. Its bright Blue.

No, the '91 cluster has an electronically driven speedo, sorry I wasn't more clear about that. Since I was installing a T-56 tranny I needed the electronically driven speedo anyway so it worked out great. That's why I said in my other post that I'm not sure what to tell you if you need to keep the cable driven speedo setup, because I don't know of any Firebird speedos that were cable driven and went higher than 85 MPH
If you need to keep the cable driven speedo I'd say just find a complete V-8 cluster from an '85 (my '85 S/E has a V-8 and a cable driven 85 MPH speedo, just like my '84 had originally) and swap it in. Maybe someone else knows of a certain year/option package that had a cable driven speedo that read higher than 85 MPH, but I don't know if any.
Thanks for the compliments on the car, it's a work in progress, but she's getting there. I'm in the process of tuning the new Stealth Ram EFI setup, it's certainly a new experience! Good luck with your projects!

OK thanks, i'll keep checking around.
This V6 Bird will be a 400 smallblock with a TH400
Just starting on it this weekend. Need to get all the trans adapters & stuff from Summit yet.
Also, for my Black T/A, I'm looking to hook up a 1977-81 shaker hood scoop to the 350, I think it'll look cool, but I dont have the heart yet to cut the huge hole in the hood.......
It should look neat, cuz I have the full size 42" Gold bird on the black hood, and then the shaker is gold too.
I have never ever seen this setup on a Gen 3 car.
I hope it turns out ok. It sure looks sweet on a Gen2 :

Go to the junk yard, and look for another bird with a hood like yours, any car that ive seen in the yard that doesnt have front damage as a decent hood, buy that, usually less then $35 and play with it, ive got some pics of that done to a 3rd gen, looks mean, but just my opinion,
