Are there any automatic shifter ***** I can get that will be a lower profile? The shift **** on my Trans Am is pretty tall and I want it a little lower. I am putting my AVIC-N1 from my GSX into the TA and it looks like the screen will clear the **** right now but I wouldn't mind being on the safe side and gaining a little more clearance. I have the T-handle shifter with the C-clip that holds it in.


I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money on a shifter I just want it a little lower.

Aside from that, if you felt adventurous you just cut your stock shifter down to whatever height you wanted. You'd just have to make sure to cut the little plastic string of ***** inside the shifter shaft and drill two holes for that little c-clip.

 

I did until the timing belt slipped and took out some valves.

So no one knows of any shifter ***** that can go on that might sit a little lower? I just need a little more clearance for the screen to be able to come out without smacking the shifter when it's in park. This T-handle one sits really high. If it sat just a little lower than I would have no worries.

 

The auto camaro ***** may sit a little less high.

Cutting the current one is about the only option I know of. The shifter itself is large because of a lever in there to change the thumb button hoizontal movement to vertical for the shifter.. detents (I guess they are called ?).

 

I think the Camaro ones do site a little lower. I think I remember awhile back trying to put one in my car but having trouble. Are the shifter shafts different on Firebirds than they are on Camaros? Or should I be able to use Camaro ones in my TA with no problems?

 

I honestly don't have an answer for that.
I didn't pay much regard to my (old 84 sc) shifter when I changed them out.
The 'ball' shifter was toast when I got my ex-camaro and I bought a 'bird shifter/handle for $5 at the local pull-a-part.
IMO, might as well get the whole thing. If you screw up cutting the'new one', you can just put the old back in place and not be out a ride (if it's a daily driver).
It's not to difficult to swap out auto shifters (about a 30min. job in a camaro... pwr accys might add time though).
