I am about to have my 91 RS Painted. I want to bring down the cost of the paint job. I already decided that I will take apart most of the easy parts & that I will paint the engine bay. However, what is required for paint prep on the outer body? Unfortunately, my car was painted by MACCO about 1-1/2 years ago. I would like to get that paint off so I dont have to worry about that paint peeling and taking my new paint with it. I am sure I will need to sand the entire car. However should I sand it down to the bare metal?
What other tips can you guys give me?

As with everything, set your parameters, and weigh that against how much money you have to spend....
I would check with the shop first, make your wishes known, and see if they will even work on it after you have done your thing...
most should, but probably no guarantee unless they are doing all the work.
Another good idea would be to ask them how they would like things done, (as if they were doing the job) Ie; If you were going to strip the car to metal... what products would they like you to use to protect it, before you bring it in?? (make sure you strip and protect a panel at a time... It takes no time at all for oxidation to start!!!) A good shop will try to stick with a name brand all the way through.
What type of paint did the MAACO hacks use?? Probably Enamel...
Did they use hardener?? If not, it will come off kinda hard.
same with laquer.
Was the finish under the MAACO job original??
If not, I would seriously think about stripping it and working from the ground up.

two coats on the car i would strip it down bare and start fresh. do a search on my project the thread was great for all your questions. search for " project resurection"
