Fixing aero spoiler with fiberglass?????????
Hello,
My girl friend is looking into getting an 87 TA and the spoiler is as you all know warped looking and the paint is all chipped off it. Now this car may be bought for around $1000. So right away its not worth sinking alot of money into like a new glass wing and then a perfessional paint job. Its not ganna happen even tho it would be nice.
Heres what i was thinking.... what is if use the factory cr@py wing as a mold and layer fiberglass resin over it and maybe a layer of matting or 2. If i use enoght resin then some sort of body filler top coat to sand out farly level...then paint. Does anyone think this will work?? I dont think ill have any seperation problems between the wing and glass because the glass will wrap right around underneath holding itself on.
When I did a search and the only person I found who I seen may have tryed it with fiberglass was a guy named "bnoon". I have PMed him but still no reply. Has any one else tryed puting fiberglass over the whole wing. I have used fiberglass before and I think it should work.

Three separate painters Ive talked to has said it's not impossible to do. They all talked about using some sort of "plastic" filler, meant for bumpers I suppose. I have seen one locally who have painted it successfully, don't know how long it's been since he did it though.
It seems not impossible to do, only might not hold up in the long run. For others 3-4 years is enough.. and perhaps it will last longer... who knows.

Which wing are we talking about???
Is it the T-bar wing, or the wrap-around GTA style??
Either one is VERY repairable, as long as there are no large chunks missing, you're golden.

I think he's talking about the aerowing, correct me if I'm wrong, and I guess he's talking about the fine hairline cracks they all get.
On mine most of the cracks where around the area where you put your hand when closing the hatch. So I guess if you close it without hands, it'll hold up fine

I say remove it, fill the holes, and re-paint the hatch panel. That thing is 30lbs
Mine was real ugly looking and the leading wrap-around parts would flap around on the highway

I thought so, but wanted to be clear...
Still repairable. A LOT, AND I MEAN, A LOT, of people are under the assumption that you can paint these just like any other panel and they'll hold up....
It all goes back to what I've been saying for a long time now USE FLEX AGENT PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You need to get all that old paint off, prep it with a plastic parts cleaner... use an adhesion promoter for plastics, prime with a two part primer (WITH FLEX), sand, paint and clear(WITH FLEX!)
OH, and another thing...IT'S NOT A HANDLE!!!!!!!!!!!!
close the lid with your hand lightly on the STEEL portion of the outer edge...
How many times have we seen the T-bar spoiler bite in to the lid because of somebody using it to open and close??

ok thanks looks like flex and adihsion is the key...... because taking it off isnt an option....my gf actually bought the car last week i think she has pics on cardomain ill post a link of the condition of the wing as soon as i know her address.
