Carpet weights (OEM vs. After Market)

Just curious about after market carpeting.

I received some samples of carpeting from http://www.stockinteriors.com
and they seemed kind of thin, but the price is real reasonable....about $114.00 for passenger compartment. They quoted the weight as 13.5 oz carpeting. Does anyone know what the weight is for stock carpeting or from Year One or other manufacturers?

The other thing is that they mold the carpet to fit the floorboard and they only attach jute backing on areas where your feet would be on the carpet. Is that typical?

Thanks!

Thanks

Thanks for the bump up. You would think SOMEBODY on this board would have replaced their factory carpeting and maybe paid attention to the quality of the material.

I honestly do not know the specific weight of all the things I have done, but I can tell you that the stock carpet that I pulled out weights at least 3 times more than the non-padded outdoor-sie kinda carpet I put in aftewards. I set them both side by side and tried to pick them up and it was a huge difference...

Here's the thing... The stock carpet is rubber backed. The padding under it is light. The carpet it self is light, but it's made onto a big thick "rubber floor mat".

You know the rubber floor mats you can buy that has chevy, heartbeat, or cartoons on them. Well those feels just like what the stock carpet is made onto. It's under every single inch of the stock carpet, and can not be threw out, unless you throw out the carpet too

I weigh stuff as I pull out, put in, so I can keep up with my total weight.

The stock carpet and under padding weighed 52 lbs. Thats front to rear, all of it.

The padding.. I would say only weighed about 4-5 lbs. So that leves the carpet weighing 47-48 lbs.

I replaced mine with thin "speaker box" type carpet, sold in rolls at wal-mart, auto zone, advance auto, etc.

Took 3 rolls to do the whole car. It only weighed 7 lbs

Like he said, the diference and it is a huge one is that the factory stuff has some really thick rubber padding on the bottom that helps deaden noise. The replacement stuff doesn't have it and you need to do something to make up the difference elsewise you will lose any and all your sound deadening and the road noise will drive you crazy.

I just replaced my carpet yesterday. I bought a kit from 1A auto on Ebay. The color was an almost perfect match. It is considerably lighter but uses a thicker and sturdier padding than the stock padding which is some sort of scrap cloth material. The fit was pretty good, they only cut out a small hole for the console so you still have some other cutting to do, like for the seat bolt holes, seatbely holes etc. For extra padding, I seperated the stock padding from the origional carpet (came off pretty easy) and used a spray adhesive to stick it to the floor. I then put the new carpet over that. Came out nice. Here's a pic. The stuff on it is some remnants of the old stock padding, it comes apart easy.

Here's a picture of the aftermarket rear cargo area carpet. It actually has more padding than the front did.

Here's a picture of the stock carpet without the padding. It's just a big rubber mat. I'm satisfied with the quality of the aftermarket carpet.

Looks Good, Kevin84Z28

Looks Good, Kevin84Z28,

Thanks for the pictures and the info. How much did your carpet cost on eBay, if you do not mind my asking?

Since my car is a convertible, I only have to buy for the passenger area and not for (in my case) the trunk.

Was/is the carpet cut pile or loop?

Since we are on the subject, I was wondering how much of a pain it was to work around the console. Does it come up pretty easily?

Thanks again for the info.

Best Wishes,

shipfitter

The kit was $260 for both, so the front only will be considerably cheaper. The type of carpet is whatever came stock for 3rd gens. The company I bought it from is 1A Auto, they make a bunch of stuff for 3rd gens. You can do a seaech on EBAY. It's easy taking the console out. It has to be removed, you can't work around it. There are two bolts inside of the map holder at the bottom, sometimes their hidden by a small piece of fabric. Remove them. Remove the shift plate console, and the radio trim piece. Pull the emergency brake all the way up. Take off the e-brake handle. The upper console will come out after disconnecting whatever electric components you have. You should see a set of bolts holding the bottom console to the floor. Remove those. Remove the screws holding the climate control panel to the console. Look to each side where the climate control panel came out and you will see two inverted bolts holding the console to the bottom dash area. Remove those. Everything should come free. This job took about 45 minutes, Tops...

carpet samples

Yeah, i found 1A auto on eBay and requested some carpet samples. Hopefully they will come through. I need to make a decision soon on carpeting. I hope to get my car out of storage by at least the middle of April, if the weather cooperates. There is so much snow here that we will probably still have snow on the ground on Memorial Day!

I also sent an e-mail to Next Gen (Year One) requesting amplifying information on their selection of carpets.

Thank you for the tutorial on removing the console. I am going to save THAT post for sure!

Thanks again,

shipfitter

Thats true, when you order the carpet from 1A Auto they send you the samples, you choose what you want then they order the carpet from the manufacturer. Took about 3 weeks from the time my samples arrived until the time my carpet arrived. It was kind of strange because I bought the carpet online via EBAY. When I completed the sale I figured they would then have a screen where I would pick the color, nope. Then you call the next day and make contact. They sent you samples, six in my case. I called back and gave them the sample number. 3 weeks later the carpet arrived.

yeah ,
This might sound like white trash but.. I got some dupicolor vinyl and carpet rattel can paint it turned out good.. I dont know how long it will last.. and it comes out kinda hard and rough, and I think it will wear out, if you keep on steping on it. but it looks new and i am gonna but some floor mats so it wont weat out it took about 7 cans and 3.49 each it turned out good. i am kinda cheap on that but i think it will last a while beacuse my feet is on the matts and i dont have rear seats (removed).
i'll take pics on it and post them soon as i get the carpet in.

ACC CARPET

I did some research last night. ACC does provide carpeting to alot of sellers online.....and ACC also sells on their own site.

Their carpet weight is 14 oz of yarn per square yard for cut pile carpet. Plus they are in the vicinity of $200, perhaps cheaper from their online dealers.

The stock interior website that started this thread is 13.5 oz of yarn per square yard @ $114.

I am only looking at passenger compartment only. The thickness and the quantity of jute backing may be different. The carpet backing itself (the material that the yarn is sewed into) ranges in thickness from 1/8" to 5/32 ". Really now, 1/32" is not going to make a difference in the short haul or the long run.

Thanks for the posts everybody. I am still checking things out, and I will keep y'all updated on what I do!
