question about door shuttin?

u know the weather stripping that runs down each door and across the bottom? is it also there to protect the doors when u shut them sort of like a cushion? of is it only to stop water and air??

Definitely to keep water being splashed upwards out...and likely to decrease highway air noise....as for cushing the car door as you close it...I doubt it. Especially old stripping which has likely hardened from sun/element exposure like mine.
