LED's!

ok...I did a search on this like a good boy, but everything was about the dash lights or was way outdated.....when is someone going to offer LED tailights for our car? I loved the idea of being able to buy a kit for my car but then i read the post about the guy ripping everybody off with his kit. But it seems like everybody kinda lost interest...so i decided to resurrect the idea!haha.I'd do them myself if someone professional posted like a tutorial with a sticky or whatever that is..but yah..so ideas as so to how to do them properly? I'm not much of an electrician, so if its really hard then i'll just give up, but im milking this topic for all its worth cuz i really enjoy LED tailights.ok. im done. bye

cool...thanks. which ones work for our cars and you just plug this into your car and go or is there some modifying and fabrication involved? sorry if this is a dumb question.

They plug right in. I forget the stock bulbs, maybe they were 1157s?

I think the problem people had with the 1157 leds in the tailight was that the light was to focused. The light doesnt disperse and just looks like a " hot spot". Also there can be issues with turn signals.

There likely will be unless you add a resistor circuit, or design a time delay circuit. The factory flasher unit on these cars works off of amperage draw, and LED's draw almost none.

well, ive decided to just get them...50 bucks wont kill me and if I dont like them then I just wont use them...i'll ebay 'em or something. The question I do have is about what size I should get. Should I get the 30 led bulbs, the wide angle 19 led bulbs, or the 24 led bulbs with 6 radially mounted led's. sorry for dragging on about this but I want to persue this and your guys' input is very helpful.Thanks..

The plug and play ones, don't work very good for tail lights. They don't light up the whole housing, and like someone else said, just create a hotspot.

What alot of people are doing (haven't seen any for camaros yet) but are making their own PCB's and retro fitting it into the tail light housings.

Take a look HERE, and see what some of these guys have done.

I've thought about it, but it would be expensive to do.

LEDs have a lot of advantages, but most people in this hobby use them for color flexibility, and for added brightness. Neither of which is needed for tailights. You don't need to change the color of course, and I tested some hyperwhite bulbs in my tails and they were SO bright that I took 'em out. LEDs can be even brighter.

That's not to say they're bad. What the heck, give 'em a shot and like you said, if ya don't like 'em, take'em out.

The turn signal snafu can be overcome with a Grote LED turn signal flasher #44891. It's not a "plug & play" though. The terminals have to be jumpered to the correct terminals in the flasher receptacle. Very simple. It also has an external ground wire that you must either put in the receptacle ground (easiest)or ground it to the chassis nearby. I've tried the "resistor" route, spent a lot of money on resistors that were supposed to correct turn signal problems. They DO NOT work properly, plus they build up EXTREME heat.

autozone sells a plug and play flasher that will solve the problem with the blink rate, it is for "trailer use" and is solid-state insted of working off a bi-metalic strip, also dose anyone make somthing similar to TheGreatJ's taillights, I really want a set.
